The Swedish School in Portland is looking for a grade school level teacher to support children between the ages of 6 and 9 for our Grupp 1 class, in Swedish language and culture for the 2025-2026 Spring Term.
Classes are held 2 Saturdays per month 9:30am-1:30pm at Augustana Lutheran Church (NE Irvington) in Portland. If you are someone who is proficient in Swedish language, culture and traditions and would enjoy teaching Swedish language, arts, crafts and other fun activities to children 2 Saturdays each month then please contact us [email protected]

We are enthusiastic about fostering students’ interest in the Swedish language and traditions. We enjoy singing, crafts, games and baking. We organize outdoor days and have our own Lucia procession and other fun activities. Classes are conducted by part-time teachers paid on an hourly basis. The school board is run by parent volunteers who also enjoy helping in the classroom, and with special events like our annual Lucia and fundraising events.
The Swedish School in Portland is a non-profit association run by volunteers since established in 1997. The school’s primary purpose is to teach Swedish to children from Swedish-speaking families who speak both English and Swedish. Most of our students come from a bilingual home(ie both Swedish and English are spoken at home. More information is available at

✨ Glad Lucia! | Happy Lucia! ✨

På lördag fylldes vår skola av ljus, sång och glädje när våra elever firade Luciadagen, en älskad svensk tradition som sprider ljus i årets mörkaste tid.🕯️

Klädda i vitt—med glada peppargubbar!—sjöng barnen traditionella luciasånger och delade en fin stund av gemenskap.

Efter firandet samlades vi i gemenskap för fika, med njöt av hembakade bullar och godsaker, samtal och samvaro.☕🍪

Tack till våra elever, familjer och pedagoger som gjorde detta luciafirande så minnesvärt.

On Saturday our school was filled with candlelight, song, and joy as our students celebrated Lucia Day, a cherished Swedish tradition that brings light into the darkest time of the year. 🕯️

Dressed in white—with cheerful peppargubbar!—our children sang traditional Lucia songs and shared a beautiful moment of togetherness.

After the celebration, we gathered as a community for fika, enjoying homebaked rolls and treats, conversation, and connection. ☕🍪

Thank you to our students, families, and teachers for making this Lucia celebration so special.

Lärare sökes till Svenska Skolan i Portland

The Swedish School in Portland is looking for a teacher - please share!

Svenska Skolan i Portland söker en lärare till skolåret 2024-25. Läraren, i samarbete med lärarassistent samt föräldrahjälp efter behov, undervisar barn i åldrarna 6-12 år med fokus på svenska, både det skrivna och talade språket, och svenska traditioner och kultur. Klassen består av maximalt 12 barn. Undervisningen hålls på svenska och klassen möts ungefär varannan lördag kl. 9.30-13.30 på Augustana Lutheran Church (NE Irvington) i Portland. Vi söker en person som talar flytande svenska (gärna svenska som modersmål) och dessutom gärna erfarenhet av att arbeta med barn i skolmiljö. Skolåret börjar i september och avslutas i juni. Positionen är avlönad (per timme).
Svenska Skolan i Portland är en idéell förening verksam sedan 1997. Skolans främsta syfte är att erbjuda individuellt anpassad undervisning i svenska till barn från svensktalande familjer. De flesta av våra elever kommer från ett tvåspråkigt hem (dvs. både svenska och engelska talas i hemmet). Vi arbetar också för att utveckla elevernas intresse för Sverige samt svensk kultur och traditioner. Utöver språkundervisning ägnar vi oss gärna åt sång, pyssel, lek, och bakning. Vi ordnar friluftsdagar och har eget Luciatåg, mm. Undervisningen ges av tre anställda lärare samt lärarassistenter vid behov. Den övriga verksamheten sköts av föräldrar på volontärbasis.
