Renewal in the Wilderness

Renewal in the Wilderness Renewal in the Wilderness is a nonprofit organization based in Portland, Maine. We guide encounters with wildness that strengthen cultures of compassion.

We work hard to create experiences that are fun, accessible, and memorable. When we look around us we see that there are so many people who are also working hard to contribute comfort, justice, security, health and wholeness to the world. A lot of these people live in a constant state of exhaustion. The nature of their work, combined with the extent of their commitments, leaves them at high risk o

f compassion-fatigue and professional burnout. We exist to help sustain the compassion that you dole out in the world! We want you (care providers, justice workers, faith leaders) to continue doing your beautiful work without compromising your own sense of well-being. We partner with a variety of organizations and communities to help make these experiences possible for those who need it. Can you relate? Contact us so that we can talk about you joining us on one of our trips. We'll go somewhere wild and beautiful, and take some really deep breaths.

As we head into a new season we’re taking some time to reflect and renew as an organization. In 2021 we’ll be figuring out how to operate in a new context as a volunteer-run organization. We don’t have much programming on the calendar right now, but we are immersed in a season of imagining what’s next. Toward that end, we’d love to hear from you and we’d love to keep on keeping you posted! Don't hesitate to reach out...

Friends of Renewal! We're excited to be collaborating with The BTS Center to help support their vision for this year's Convocation - a gathering (online) of those committed to Engaged Hope in the midst of complicated and urgent realities of ecological crisis.

Native American attorney, teacher, activist and change maker, Sherri Mitchell – Weh’na Ha’mu Kwasset, is the keynote speaker. And there's a slate of other thinkers, artists, and guides (including our Exectuive Director, Aram Mitchell) who will be offering insights and grounding experiences throughout.

Have a look and hope you'll join us!

We are 5 weeks in to our 7-week guided book study (Rooted & Rising: Voices of Courage in a Time of Climate Crisis) in collaboration with The BTS Center. Each week we've gathered with about 60 other weary yet committed souls to decipher our personal and collective call to help curb the climate crisis, and to discern the best ways to hold on to (a complicated yet necessary) hope in the midst of multifaceted crises. It's a journey. Wherever you are on that journey, we're rooting for you. And thought this might be an encouraging read along the way.

A climate scientist talks to a psychologist about coping with the crushing stress related to climate change. Here’s what he learned.
