Training for a Marathon
Rather train yourself for Godliness.
1 Timothy 4:7 ESV
"Rome wasn't built in a day."
"Olympic athletes don't shatter world records on their first day."
"Ball games are won in the off season."
"Preparation allows you to play fast."
All these sayings are marks, within athletic or warlike scenarios, that paint a picture of process. Though we are sold on the motto "quicker is better," the spiritual development of the heart takes time to marinate. The character of the man takes time to ripen. Don't take shortcuts in your sanctity, and don't despise the process. Buckle yourself in for the long haul and embrace the fact that you are a work in progress.
Lord Jesus, grant me and all men the patience to endure our own personal development. Give us zeal to pursue your goodness. Help us ti keep our eyes on you, that we might not measure ourselves against anything else. Amen
