Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) reports that zebra mussels have recently been discovered in moss balls at pet stores across the Pacific Northwest. These invasive species are extremely harmful and can even destroy large sections of aquatic habitat. Zebra mussels will change the chemistry of the water (which can cause more blue green algae outbreaks) and clog water intake and delivery systems for drinking water, irrigation, and hydro power.
If you have recently purchased moss balls for your home aquarium, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife asks that you please safely dispose of them by following the steps below:
1. Put moss ball in a Ziploc bag and place in freezer for a while
2. Boil moss ball in water
3. Be sure to not flush moss balls down the toilet or tossing outdoors
If you have recently purchased moss balls, ODFW asks that you please safely dispose of tank water and disinfect your aquarium following these guidelines:
1. After removing fish, put bleach (one cup bleach per one gallon water) in tank and let sit for at least 10 minutes before disposing of water
2. Disinfect filters, gravel, and structures with bleach solution
Please help prevent the spread of these invasive species. To learn more about disposing of moss balls properly and how to disinfect your tank, watch the following video provided by ODFW: Zebra Mussels: How to decontaminate your aquarium - YouTube
You can also report any zebra mussel sightings to the USGS Nonindigenous Aquatic Species database: nas.er.usgs.gov/SightingReport.aspx. Or, call the Oregon Invasive Species Hotline at 1-866-INVADER.
