AUGUSTA, Maine (WABI) -
The public was invited to speak on a proposal Thursday morning that is seeking to memorialize a lost law enforcement officer.
Hancock County Sheriff Deputy Luke Gross was killed in September of 2021 after being struck by a pickup truck in the line of duty.
On Thursday, a public hearing was held for legislation that looks to name a portion of Route 3 in Trenton, where he lost his life, as the Deputy Luke Gross Memorial Highway along with signage to be posted.
Lawmakers, fellow officers and friends of Gross spoke at the hearing reflecting on his life and service. Calling him kind, a role model and a crucial part of the community.
“What really, truly set Luke apart was who he was beyond the uniform. Luke was kind, he was caring and despite the weight of his profession, he was still a kid at heart,” said Hancock County Sheriff Scott Kane. “Someone who could bring lightness, laughter and humanity simply by being who he was.”
“He didn’t just enforce the law, he served the community,” added Rep. Steve Bishop, R-Bucksport. “He did it with empathy and he did it with patience that I always wish I had. He always took the time to treat people with dignity and respect. Those qualities earned him a lot of trust with the public and a deep respect of those that worked alongside him.”
Bishop worked alongside Gross during his time in law enforcement.
There was no testimony against the proposal. It now heads to work session in committee.
