In light of current events with PM Netanyahu, we are bringing here a response by on of O4I members, Ohad:
"As an Israeli who now calls the United States home, I watched Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to Congress with a mix of pride and concern. His words carried weight, resonating with the historical context that binds our two nations. Netanyahu’s tone was resolute, invoking the spirit of leaders who have stood before him.
He scolded critics of Israel’s war in Gaza, portraying them as either motivated by Iran or antisemitism. While I appreciate his unwavering commitment to our country’s security, I also recognize the complexity of the conflict. The casualties—both Israeli and Palestinian—are a painful reminder that peace remains elusive.
Netanyahu boasted about Israel’s efforts to limit civilian casualties and facilitate humanitarian aid into Gaza. But this view clashes with international organizations like the United Nations, which have raised concerns about the impact on civilians.
As the American flag fluttered outside Union Station, protesters marched, their voices echoing dissent. Representative Rashida Tlaib’s dramatic sign—labeling Netanyahu a ‘war criminal’ and ‘guilty of genocide’—captured the intensity of the moment.
Republicans applauded, while liberal Democrats boycotted the speech. It’s a stark reminder that our shared values sometimes diverge when it comes to the Middle East.
In the end, Netanyahu’s Churchillian moment—surpassing even Winston Churchill in addressing Congress—left me pondering the delicate balance between strength and compassion. As an Israeli living here, I hope for peace, understanding, and a future where both Israelis and Palestinians can thrive."
