Executive Director, Simon Rucker, was out at Moxie Pond last week for a site visit to this exciting in-process project! In partnership with Northeast Wilderness Trust and Trust for Public Land, this 1,845 acre parcel will stay forever wild and provide access for public recreation for generations to come.

Last week the team laced up for a stewardship visit to Grafton Notch Forest Wilderness Preserve and honestly, this one's special. 🌲
These 1,356 acres are protected forever, tucked along one of the most iconic stretches of the Appalachian Trail. Since 2022, this land has been permanently safeguarded in partnership with the Northeast Wilderness Trust meaning it stays wild, for good.
If you've hiked Old Speck Mountain, you've actually walked through this preserve already. Part of the Speck Pond Trail runs right through it, so every step on that section is a step through protected ground.

These forests and mountains are home to countless species and are a special place for outdoor lovers near and far. Along the 100 mile wilderness and throughout the whole A.T. corridor in Maine, MATLT catalyzes land conservation projects for the good of all.

Did you know that today is “GIS Day”!? MATLT loves using GIS in our work so much that three years ago, we developed a whole project around mapping the A.T. in Maine.

MATGIC (Maine Appalachian Trail Geospatial Information for Conservation) is a data project that uses publicly available GIS data and covers 1,708,013 acres of land within two miles of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail in Maine.

As MATLT board member Peter S. McKinley puts it, “The MATGIC project is the best tool we have for analyzing the land along the A.T. in Maine for land conservation. Using this kind of data as the Maine Appalachian Trail Land Trust has put it all together is a way to take advantage of opportunities and also counter threats to Maine’s A.T landscape.”
