Dear TPTA Member,

At yesterday’s Sunday mixer we had the largest turnout in a long time. 25 people came. That is really awesome. Thank you. While this was probably not the new normal, there has been a higher attendance lately, and it is great to see.

We would like to try out a new format on Sundays. One that will hopefully make playing more fun and will entice players who are not fans of the current format to give the mixer another try.

Currently we play 8 game “sets” with no ad on all four Glendoveer courts. Players rotate off and on with an overarching goal to play with and against as many different people as possible. The players’ skill levels are largely ignored.

The new format will take skill levels into consideration. There will be a 15 minute warm up starting at 9:15 AM. At 9:30 AM a board designated member will pick groups of four and dispatch players to courts. Regular ITF rules of play apply. Full sets are played with ad. Play stops after 30 minutes, at 10:00 AM regardless of the score. Players are then reassigned and new matches begin. This will be repeated two more times for a total of four 30 minute matches. At 11:30 AM the format reverts to the current 8 game “set” format.

Anyone arriving after 9:30 AM is allowed first in serves, but due to the rigid time constraints, there will be no additional warm up time.

We recognize this is a big change from how the mixer has operated for many years. And while this format will initially pigeonhole some players until they improve, it will also provide higher rated players more challenges. Furthermore, if you have not attended a Sunday mixer in a while and this appeals to you, we strongly encourage you to give this a try. The fee is $15.

We hope you are open trying something different and that this will be a fun, if perhaps temporary, change.

Thanks,

Cord, Martin, Scott and Zach

Dear TPTA Member,

It is time to formalize plans for the 2019 tournament season. This year we plan to send teams to the Northwest Cup in Vancouver, BC and Pacific Cup in San Francisco.

We also intend on holding at least one club tournament and of course the Rose City Open.

Much work goes into these events, and we are grateful to the players who commit their time and money and especially grateful to the captains who are the all-important keystone locking the whole together.

Please let us know if you think you may be interested in captaining one of this year’s teams. Some have generously voiced their interest in the past. However, realizing life has a way of unexpectedly changing, please let us know if you are still willing to lead a team by replying to this email.

The Northwest Cup is a team tennis tournament where “A” and open level (USTA NTRP rating 4.5 and above) players from the GLTA tennis teams in Vancouver, Seattle and Portland meet to compete. This year the tournament will be held one weekend in Vancouver, BC between mid May and mid June. (The dates will be set shortly.)

The Pacific Cup is a team tennis tournament for “B” and advanced “C” level (USTA NTRP rating 3.5 - 4.0) players from Canadian and US Pacific Coast cities. It will be held mid to late September, and more information will follow as it becomes available.

We look forward to a fun filled 2019. In addition to tournaments, we are planning non-tennis related events. Current ideas are an evening at Top Golf, a white water rafting day trip down the Deschutes (Maupin) and a wine tasting bus tour. Let us know if you have suggestions or would like to volunteer putting something together.

Have a great week.

Thanks,

Cord, Martin, Scott and Zach
