Tree 6 in the Mt. Tabor Tree Guide is a living fossil: the ginkgo.

Ginkgoes (Ginkgo biloba) look like deciduous trees and have vibrant yellow fall foliage, but as a gymnosperm, the species is more closely related to conifers. They are not native to Oregon, but they have a long history here. They are in the fossil record of the John Day Fossil Beds in the Mascall Formation, which was formed by volcanic activity 15 million years ago. Of course, that’s relatively recent for an order of plants that has existed for 250 million years or more! 🦕 🦖

The fifth tree in the Mt. Tabor Tree Guide goes by many names: Nyssa sylvatica, aka tupelo, black tupelo, black gum, and sour gum.

Native to eastern North America, the tree’s outstanding features include brilliant fall foliage, furrowed bark that is often compared to alligator skin, and small, greenish-white flowers that produce extra-sweet honey that is resistant to crystallization.

The London plane tree (Platanus × acerifolia, tree #4 in the Mt. Tabor tree guide) has a rich international history only partially revealed by its name. 🌍

The tree is a hybrid, specifically a cross between the American sycamore and the Oriental plane tree, first bred in Europe. It went on to become one of the most widely planted urban trees in the world, lining the streets of London and Paris. This one, of course, is at home on our own Mt. Tabor Park.

This tree is worth a longer look for its shape and textures. Its sinewy trunk and branches stand out in the canopy, and its multicolored exfoliating bark gives the tree a distinctive mottled appearance.

A tree with ancestors from two continents, at home in the world’s great cities, and thriving in Portland. We agree that Mt. Tabor is a fine place to put down roots.

Have you ever looked at one of the massive trees in Mt. Tabor Park and wondered, “How old is this tree?”

If so, the next event in our free Urban Nature Series is just for you.

On Sunday, May 31, join us to learn about the age of the trees in the park. We’ll meet at the Visitor Center and look at some stumps, then meander past some of the largest specimens in the park.
