Club Kid. 2020 Youth of the Year. College graduate. And now… future lawyer. ⚖️🎓

Joshua earned dual degrees in Political Science and Criminology from the University of Southern Maine and is now pursuing his law degree at the University of Maine, Class of 2027.

Through it all, Joshua says the relationships he built at the Club helped shape who he is today.

“The Club has been one of the most meaningful communities in my life... I was blessed with outstanding mentors who invested their time, wisdom, and encouragement in me.”

And even while tackling law school, Joshua continues to make time to volunteer and give back to the next generation of Club Kids. đź’™

We’re proud to be part of your story, Joshua, and we can’t wait to see where it takes you next!

Snacks + games + Club friends = a pretty great day. 🙌 🍓

This summer, our Club kids came together at the South Portland Clubhouse for a visit from Hannaford’s Snack Pals! From games and activities to nutritious snacks and facts, the day was all about showing kids that making healthy choices can be fun, too. 🍎🥕💙

Thanks to Hannaford Supermarkets and the Snack Pals team for bringing the excitement to BGCSM and giving our members another summer memory to take with them!

For Dan, being part of Boys & Girls Club didn’t end when he grew up, it became a lifelong commitment to giving back.

A proud BGCSM alumni, Dan joined the Alumni Association in the 1980s and our Board in 2004. Over the decades, he’s watched generations of Club kids grow up, find their path, and become part of the communities they once grew up in.

After serving in the military, Dan built a successful career as the owner of Daniel T. Haley Insurance, now United Insurance, a longtime BGCSM corporate partner.

Today, Dan and his wife Connie continue to welcome new supporters into the BGCSM community, while Dan remains our unofficial historian for the Portland Clubhouse. đź’™

Dan’s story is a reminder that the impact of the Club doesn’t end when childhood does. It carries forward for generations.

Thank you, Dan, for continuing to be part of our story.

When the school day ends, there’s still plenty of learning, growing, creating and connecting to do.

Here, kids have a safe place to belong, caring adults & mentors in their corner, and opportunities to discover what’s possible.

Because what happens after school matters đź’™

Creativity was in full swing this summer at our Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine's South Portland Clubhouse thanks to the amazing team at Mama Mia Making !

Their mobile art trailer brought hands-on creativity right to our Club, giving members the chance to explore a new art projects from painting and crafting to trying something completely new, these experiences encouraged imagination, self-expression, and plenty of smiles along the way.

A huge thank you to Mama Mia Making for helping our members create, explore, and discover that there's no limit to what they can imagine. 💙🎨✨

Roger Charest's personal journey with Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine began in 2004, but stories like his have been in the making for nearly 100 years.

Ed Hannaford, founder of Hannaford Supermarkets, led the capital campaign that built our Portland Clubhouse in 1931. From there, the organization grew to include the South Portland Clubhouse (1974), Auburn Clubhouse (1995), and Lewiston Teen Center (2022).

Current Machias Hannaford Supermarkets Store Manager, Roger Charest, attended the Auburn Club, participating in Club experiences like Keystone Club, Torch Club, outdoor adventures, and youth mentorship. Through these experiences, enabled by the early vision of Ed Hannaford and Hannaford Supermarkets, Roger learned leadership, teamwork, and the importance of giving back.

Today, Roger gives back to BGCSM as an advocate along with his wife, Nikki, whom he met at the Club.

One lesson from the Club still guides him today:
"We sink or swim as a team."

Roger's story truly brings Ed Hannaford’s vision to life and proves that every young person has incredible potential when they're given the opportunity, support, and encouragement to grow.

Thank you, Roger, for being an inspiring example of what it means to be a Club alum. đź’™

"The Club provided lessons that stayed with us long after we left, and I will always cherish those memories."

For Tom Coyne, a Club member from 1979–1987, growing up on Munjoy Hill in Portland was a blessing, and the Portland Boys & Girls Club (then, the Portland Boys Club) was at the very center of it.

The Club started as just a fun place to play sports, but Tom quickly realized his afternoons at the Club were teaching him and his peers the foundational values that would shape the rest of their lives."

Looking back, it was so much more than that. It was a place where we learned to build friendships with kids from many different backgrounds. We learned lessons about diversity, acceptance, kindness, resilience, and overcoming hardships."

Today, Tom is still opening those same doors for the next generation as an active board member, volunteer, and generous donor.

Thank you, Tom, for your decades of dedication!
