This year we are looking for four new people to join the MAM board. As an association, MAM is made up of historical societies, museums, and archives from every county in Maine. Our membership ranges from small organizations run entirely by volunteers to large institutions with paid staff. We want our board to better reflect MAM membership, so we especially encourage nominations from smaller or all-volunteer organizations, and from northern, western, and downeast Maine.

For more information and to nominate yourself or someone else, head to https://tinyurl.com/2027nom.

Maine is a big state, and it’s not always easy to get together in person, so we strive to build connections in a variety of ways. Our member listserv facilitates peer-to-peer conversation for those seeking advice and offering guidance as well as a free-venue for promotion of upcoming events. Online “Member Meetups” create a community space in person, for casual conversation, mentorship, and connection. And it’s been a while, but this summer we’ll be relaunching our mixers throughout the state, so members can get together in person to visit a museum or archive and then connect over food and drink!

MAM’s annual conference brings together museum and archive staff from around the state to learn from and connect with one another. We offer casual networking, traditional instruction, and hands-on pre-conference experiences in nearby member institutions. It’s a chance to come together and build upon the enthusiasm and passion that we all share for the work we do!

Whether you’re a brand new volunteer or someone who has been working in the field for decades, there is always something new to learn! MAM offers workshops based on topics our members request and we keep our costs as low as possible to ensure they are accessible for staff at even the smallest institutions. Whether you’re learning online or in person, MAM’s workshops set you up with new skills and guidance from instructors with real-world experience who understand that we’re almost never working in perfect conditions, but that we can still maintain best practices for the health and sustainability of our collections.

MAM believes that working with students is the best way to ensure our museums and archives are staffed for generations to come. We encourage students to publish their research in our newsletter and present at our annual conference, offer discounted rates for membership and conference attendance, and work with member organizations to promote their internship opportunities. Our goal is to ensure that any student with an interest in history and collecting institutions has the connections and experiences they need to pursue a dynamic career.

MAM fights to ensure that our state’s museums, archives, libraries, historical societies, and other collecting institutions have the resources they need. Through meetings with our elected representatives and their staff to sharing the importance of federal grant-making agencies like the IMLS and by showing up at the state house to talk about the need for better health insurance options for our workers, MAM is there, championing our institutions and the people who staff them, ensuring they have the resources to everything they need to amplify and activate our shared history and cultural heritage.

MAM is still accepting proposals for this year's conference and we want to hear from you! Whether you've got a program model that can be replicated at other institutions, you've got knowledge about collections care, fundraising expertise, or anything else that you think your friends at MAM want to know about, you should submit!

Have a partially formed idea but want someone to collaborate with? We can help! We created a brainstorming document that allows you to find someone to craft a proposal with. You can find it at tinyurl.com/MAMCon2026
