On September 10th we had our 36th Annual Campaign Kickoff Event in Portland! Thanks to everyone who attended! It was wonderful to gather again with folks and make plans for the campaign season ahead. I hope it will be a fantastic year!

We want to thank our speakers who helped up make the event such a success! Special thanks to Justice Rebecca Duncan for her inspiring keynote address, especially her thoughts on Dr. Cornel West’s quote: “Justice is what love looks like in public.” Fighting for equality and standing up for people who are vulnerable is one way we put that idea into practice.

A warm thanks to everyone who donated to the Leadership Fund. Our goal is to raise $1.7 million for legal aid and this fund helps us provide special matches to encourage more giving, including a match for all donations made by first-year lawyers.

CEJ supports Oregon's legal aid programs, which includes Legal Aid Services of Oregon (LASO). They provide free civil legal services to low-income and senior Oregonians. They received Best General Law Firm Second Place in Willamette Week Readers' Poll. Thank you for all your great work, LASO!!

It could have been much worse. Congress passed a 3.6% cut to federal funding for legal aid, which is a $241,131 reduction in Oregon field grants for this year. Private support for CEJ and legal aid is more important than ever.

LSC President Ron Flagg hit the nail on the head when he said “we’re grateful that proposals for more significant cuts have not prevailed, but any cut threatens the stability and safety of American families, seniors and veterans who rely on already under-resourced legal services.”

A little more about why funding this program is so important: LASO is committed to pay equity, which includes funding law clerk positions. Unpaid clerkships limit the access of these valuable learning experiences to those who can afford to work without compensation. This model reinforces the socioeconomic and racial disparities already so prevalent in the legal profession. Legal aid funding is uncertain and therefore we are striving to help them secure private funding for the law clerk program for this coming summer.

On November 13th we had our Marion-Polk Luncheon with amazing turnout! A special thank you to Justice Aruna Masih for giving an impactful keynote address and to all our other speakers and volunteers who helped make our event a success. You all make this event possible and we are so grateful for you.
