It could have been much worse. Congress passed a 3.6% cut to federal funding for legal aid, which is a $241,131 reduction in Oregon field grants for this year. Private support for CEJ and legal aid is more important than ever.

LSC President Ron Flagg hit the nail on the head when he said “we’re grateful that proposals for more significant cuts have not prevailed, but any cut threatens the stability and safety of American families, seniors and veterans who rely on already under-resourced legal services.”

Let's work together to close the funding gap this year!

Let's work together to close the funding gap this year.

The bipartisan minibus passed today by the U.S. House of Representatives includes the Fiscal Year 2026 appropriations bill for the Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies, which provides $540 million for the Legal Services Corporation (LSC). This money will support civil legal assistance for...

All Give!Guide donations through the end of the day on December 24th will go toward the Legal Aid Services Of Oregon (LASO) summer law clerk program. https://giveguide.org/nonprofits/cej

The program is vital for legal aid as it:
🔸 increases the number of clients served each year;
🔸 helps raise awareness of the critical legal work legal aid does; and
🔸 develops relationships with law students and future members of the Oregon State bar.

ALSO: when you donate to CEJ this week your donation will be matched by Davis Wright Tremaine LLP, so take advantage of it today!

A little more about why funding this program is so important: LASO is committed to pay equity, which includes funding law clerk positions. Unpaid clerkships limit the access of these valuable learning experiences to those who can afford to work without compensation. This model reinforces the socioeconomic and racial disparities already so prevalent in the legal profession. Legal aid funding is uncertain and therefore we are striving to help them secure private funding for the law clerk program for this coming summer.

Thank you Governor Kotek for hosting our most committed donors and supporters at you home in May. CEJ was honored to be hosted by Governor Kotek and First Lady Aimee Kotek Wilson for a May 14th reception at Mahonia Hall. This is such an honored and meaningful tradition that we are very grateful to have been able to continue this year. We love celebrating our donors every chance we get, so thank you all again so much for making last year such an amazing one for CEJ and legal aid!

Enjoy the photos and keep up the support by attending events in the fall and making a donation to CEJ: https://cej-oregon.org/donate/

We had a wonderful event in May hosted by Markowitz Herbold PC honoring legal aid's history, celebrating our Legacy Partners Circle Donors, as well as both our endowment funds - the Barrie Herbold Fund and the Linda Clingan Fund - and those who have contributed to them.

Check out the great pictures from the fun event in this album. Thank you to everyone who attended, to our speakers Jeff Edelson and Jessica Baggenstos, as well as Molly Honore and the whole Markowitz Herbold team who helped make this wonderful event happen.

At this event we also introduced a project with Storycorps - in which the legal community can come together to tell their stories. If you would like to participate and contribute your own stories you can reach out to our office to find out how.
