The Greater Portland Immigrant Welcome Center Strengthening immigrants through language acquisition, economic integration, and civic engagement

The Greater Portland Immigrant Welcome Center is a space where non-profit organizations, start-ups or established ones working on immigrant related issues, can share space to save money, pool resources and find creative collaboration in their programming for the benefit of those they serve. This model will also allow the Center to lift and support existing organizations that are already doing good

work in the Greater Portland area, rather than reinventing the wheel or participating in unhelpful competition.

Some hard news to share.

After more than seven years of serving New Mainers at 24 Preble Street, the Immigrant Welcome Center will close its physical location at the end of June. This decision was not made lightly. Despite every effort to keep the Center open, the loss of key federal funding created a gap we couldn’t close.

Walk-in services will end on June 30, but some programming will continue this summer, including Soccer Saturday and offsite English classes. We are working closely with community partners to explore what is possible beyond this moment and to support clients through the transition.

We are proud of what this space has meant to so many people, and especially proud of the immigrant communities, staff, and volunteers who made IWC what it was.

We have turned off comments on this post so our team can get some much-needed rest over the holiday weekend. If you have questions or thoughts to share, please email [email protected] or [email protected].

This is a loss not just for us, but for the many people who relied on this space. We hope you will continue supporting the communities we have been honored to welcome.

We’ll be closed most of Memorial Day (Monday, May 26), but from 3 to 4 PM, our doors will be open for something truly special.

Artist Daniel Minter, co-founder of Indigo Arts Alliance, and artist Rosalba Breazeale will be at IWC to lead a free community bead-making workshop. Participants will hand-form clay beads that will become part of In the Life of Trees, Daniel’s upcoming public sculpture for this year’s Deconstructing the Boundaries symposium.

Each bead will carry a personal hope or intention and be added to a larger work grounded in unity, reflection, and care for the future.

We hope you can join us!

This Monday, May 19, our friends and long-time supporters Androscoggin Bank will be at IWC to teach a free financial literacy workshop.

They’ll cover the basics of personal finance and help you better understand how banking works in the U.S. Whether you’re new to the system or just want a refresher on things like budgeting, saving, and credit, this is a great opportunity to build your knowledge.

Join us from 3 to 5 p.m. at IWC (24 Preble Street).

Something very exciting is happening at IWC this week, and we hope you'll be able to join us!

We’re thrilled to welcome the Voices of Renaissance choir from Boston Renaissance Charter Public School. For 25 years, these talented students have shared songs of hope and unity, performing everywhere from the White House to the March on Washington anniversary.

They’ll be joining us on Thursday, May 15 from 3 to 4 pm for a free concert on our first floor.

We’d love for you to stop by and be part of it.

A community member generously gifted us a framed copy of We Fall and Get Up, a group poem created by members of Portland’s immigrant community on World Refugee Day 2015. For many of us, it was the first time reading it.

The poem was written as part of The Power to Tell Stories, an event where people came together to share their experiences of starting over in a new place. We knew we had to share it here too! Have you read it before, or were you part of the group who created it?

You can read the full poem in the next two slides. →

Starting over in a new country is hard. But it’s possible when barriers are lifted and you’re welcomed into a supportive community.

Read the full quote from one of our Women Lead Job Readiness graduates:

“I’m a physician in my country, so I have a degree in general medicine. It’s hard to be here because we have to start over, but I have received help from the Immigrant Welcome Center to eliminate barriers and achieve my goals. It’s hard to start, but it is possible, and I hope so that I will be better.”
