Eastside Village PDX

Eastside Village is the first grassroots aging-in-place Village in the Portland metro-area. Join us as we prepare to start offering services in September 2015.

A Village is a group of like-minded people in a geographic area who come together to help each other age affordably in their own homes. This kind of village is not a building or a real estate development or a retirement community. It is a coordinated network of volunteer and reduced cost services that supports village members to do as much for as little cost for as long as possible.

Eleven Eastsiders enjoyed lunch at OMSI’s Theory restaurant before visiting the exhibit of artifacts from the Titanic. On display were many interesting bits and pieces recovered from the 12,500-foot deep ocean floor. Perhaps even more interesting were the old photos of a very elegant cruise ship under construction and its completed luxury interior.

EV member Jana Demartini currently has an exhibit, Dancing with Trees, at the Blackfish Gallery. Last Saturday, she spoke there about her love of trees and what drives her to paint them in the various stages of their lives. Her co-panelists were local arborist Casey Clapp, author of The Trees Around You, and David-Paul Hedberg, a historian who wrote From Stumptown to Tree Town, a guide to Portland’s heritage trees. A mighty contingent of Villagers attended the presentation. Jana's show is up until May 2nd.

Jan gave a fascinating presentation to the World Cultures group yesterday, based on her two years living and working in Ukraine. She also modeled fur hats and amber jewelry, souvenirs of her time there.

The Men’s Group -- a self-described bunch of “scuzzy guys” 😆 -- visited the historic Rialto pool hall yesterday. By the look of it, fun was had!

A few shots from our "Volunteers Are Flipping Awesome!” pancake breakfast this morning. Chris Cakes Northwest's mobile grill setup was pretty awesome as well! Thanks to all the hard-working volunteers, both those who made today's celebration possible and all who give of their time and effort to provide the services our members need. We could always use more help, so if you’ve been thinking about volunteering in any capacity, now’s the time!
