The Portland Public Schools looks forward to welcoming back our students next week! As a reminder, the first day for students in grades 1-12 will be Monday,Aug. 31. Pre-K and kindergarten students will start on Tuesday, Sept. 1. Teachers and ed techs and other staff have already returned, starting yesterday, Aug. 24.
Because Labor Day is late in 2026—it’s not until Monday, Sept. 7—students and staff are beginning school before that date. This is consistent with the timing of other districts in our area. However, there will be no school on Friday, Sept. 4, making for a long holiday weekend. “People think, ‘Oh, great, you housed them. Now they’re on their own.’ That’s not how it works,” says Rachelle Welch-Nickerson, Hope House Housing Supervisor.

“We provide support after people exit shelter and move into their homes because we know housing first with support works,” shares Shane Gero-Lewis, Housing Navigator. “Especially for folks who have experienced years of homelessness. For some people, the most simple tasks – paying bills, maintaining a home – they don’t have that knowledge or those tools.”

“Housing is a big step forward, but it’s not a cure-all,” adds Mattie Knowles, Housing Navigator. “It’s not like, ‘Oh, I’m housed now. All the struggles and problems and barriers that I faced have evaporated.’ We realize that it takes a lot more than just throwing someone into a situation and thinking that’s it.”

When two organizations see the same need—and are willing to get creative—good things can happen. ❤️

We’re so grateful for our partnership with The Opportunity Alliance and their Early Head Start and Head Start programs. This partnership has become such an important part of what we’re able to offer children and families at Youth & Family Outreach.

By bringing Early Head Start and Head Start services into our program, we’re able to support families in a much more comprehensive way. Families can access high-quality early childhood education while also connecting with resources and supports that help children and parents thrive. And for children, there is the added benefit of consistency—familiar teachers, familiar surroundings, and trusted relationships.

But this partnership didn’t happen simply because it was a good idea. It happened because two organizations were willing to be resourceful, flexible, and creative about how we could make it work. YFO and The Opportunity Alliance worked together to find solutions, navigate challenges, and build something that benefits the families we both serve.

That spirit of collaboration is something we’re incredibly proud of. When we work together, we can do more.

We’re grateful to The Opportunity Alliance for being such a wonderful partner and for the difference this collaboration makes every day for children, parents, and our whole YFO community. 💙
