ORCoWS Mentoring Kids While Teaching Valuable Skills Portland, Oregon, has an alarming dropout rate in the middle and high school ages.

We would work with the schools to target those kids who are most at risk of dropping out by providing a business incubator just for them. We live in one of the inner city neighborhoods. Some of our founding team are kids who go to school with kids who are at risk for dropping out and not going any further in their education. There is a great amount of passion and capability among these kids, just

not many role models or other options for continuing with college and/or business success. With traditional mentoring programs for youth, the focus seems to be on being a good role model, which is terrific. We want to go to the next level and provide not just good role models, but mentors and showing them a way to create sustainable businesses. CosPlay, for those who aren't familiar, is creating and wearing costumes of your favorite characters. Most of the time, CosPlayers create costumes from webcomics, anime, manga, comics and video games. There is also a component of being in-character, role playing the character you are dressed as. This offers a fun way for people to explore characteristics that may not be in their every day personality. We've seen kids and adults alike find a way to express themselves in creative, fun ways through CosPlay. We are a family of entrepreneurs, mentor, coach and students who are dedicated to making a better future for our neighborhood, our schools and the city. Hopefully we'll be able to take this to the rest of the nation once we get going.

Creating a Great Experience

Customer service is a term that is used frequently, but many times without really considering what it could be. Some people seem to understand intrinsically. Some companies do a great job with it. In my mind, customer service boils down to creating a…

Setting Boundaries

Talk with virtually any counselor, therapist or life coach and they will all tell you one of the most important things to be able to stay mentally sharp and balanced is to set boundaries. Sounds fair enough. What does that mean for every day living and…

Storytelling - Old Skill, New Buzzword

A few articles this year have caught my eye – from LinkedIn, Entrepreneur, Inc. Magazine to FastCompany and a series of TED talks. It’s always intriguing what the “new” thing is. A quick Google search lets you know for certain, it seems the new buzzword…

Build a Great Reputation

This weekend I met a terrific couple. Super nice, hard working people trying to establish themselves in a new town. They have taken a step not many entrepreneurs and business people tend to ignore when building a brand. Bartering and treating each job as…

Creating a Business That Helps Others & You...

I never lack for business ideas. The struggle is finding the sweet spot where a business idea aligns with what I am good at, what I like to do and what will benefit enough people to make it a viable business. Arguably, if you are talented at marketing and…

Altruism vs. Business

I finished reading The $100 Startup: Reinvent the Way You Make a Living, Do What You Love, and Create a New Future by Chris Guillebeau, which is fairly self-explanatory in its title. It’s a book about how to start a business on a shoestring and has great…

Passion or Obsession

I follow the Dalai Lama on Twitter and Facebook. That looks really weird written down, by the way. I sound like a stalker. But I really love seeing his insights and thoughts throughout the day. It helps keep me centered. This morning, he tweeted about…

It all comes down to one thing...

This past week, I encountered the very best example and the very worst example of the one thing that can make or break you in business and arguably in life – customer service. Customer service doesn’t have to be about a financial exchange, it can be how…

DIYing life

I don’t know about you, but when I was a kid, my parents did virtually everything around the house, garden and garage themselves. From plumbing repair to fixing holes in screens, patching clothes, gardening, minor car repair – either my mom or dad would…

"Reality Women"

Trigger warnings: If you are a huge fan of oppressing women, particularly in the “Mad Men” style or 1950s era, this is not a good post for you to read. If you are averse to women’s rights, this is not a good post for you to read. Just when I thought…

Grief and Remembrance

Everyone goes through the loss of a loved one sometime in their life. It could be a friend or family. Sometimes it is a pet. For many people I know, myself included, the loss of a pet is like the loss of a close friend or family. Last Friday, I lost my…
