Myth: If someone has a job, they shouldn’t need a food pantry.

A paycheck doesn’t tell you what’s left after rent, childcare, transportation and medical bills. Food insecurity can affect people who work full time, families raising children and older adults living on fixed incomes.

As the need grows, our community can show up. At our June pop-up pantry, volunteers and donors helped provide groceries to 117 households, representing more than 400 people. We’re doing it again on Oct. 21, and we’d love your help.

Sign up to volunteer through the link in our bio. To donate unexpired nonperishable food, email [email protected] to coordinate a drop-off.

October begins with more pressure on Oregonians who depend on food assistance and health care.

Federal SNAP restrictions are already reducing or ending benefits for households that still have groceries to buy and rent to pay. This month brings changes to Oregon Health Plan coverage for some immigrants, with additional requirements coming in January.

These changes have real consequences for our neighbors. CCO is responding with our Oct. 21 Pop-Up Food Pantry, and we need volunteers and unexpired nonperishable food donations. Sign up through the volunteer page on or website or email [email protected] to arrange a donation.

If you receive SNAP or OHP, read your notices and ask what applies to you before assuming you’ve lost eligibility. Get help at benefits.oregon.gov or 800-699-9075.

What does food insecurity look like in Oregon? Sometimes it looks like a nearly empty fridge. Sometimes it looks like a full grocery cart with half the items put back at checkout.

Across Oregon and Southwest Washington, one in six people faces food insecurity. Visits to food assistance sites have risen 51% in just two years, according to Oregon Food Bank reports. Those numbers reflect neighbors making hard choices as food, rent and other essentials take up more of the household budget.

On Wednesday, Oct. 21, Catholic Charities of Oregon will host another pop-up food pantry. We need volunteers and donations of unexpired nonperishable food to help make it happen.

Volunteer through the link in our bio, or email [email protected] to arrange a food donation.

Some board work happens around a conference table. Some happens with a shovel in hand.

As part of their recent retreat, members of Catholic Charities of Oregon’s Board of Directors spent time at Kenton Women’s Village, spreading gravel, cleaning up community spaces and, most importantly, meeting and hearing directly from the women who call the Village home.

We’re deeply grateful for the time, expertise and care our board members bring to CCO. And we love opportunities like this, when the work discussed in meetings becomes something much more tangible — safer, more welcoming spaces and greater stability for the people we serve.

Thank you to our board for showing up, digging in and staying connected to the heart of our work.

For generations, immigrants and refugees have helped shape our communities, bringing their cultures, traditions, talents and hopes for a better future.

National Migration Week is an opportunity to recognize those contributions, learn more about the challenges migrants and refugees face today and consider what it means to welcome a neighbor who is starting over.

At Catholic Charities of Oregon, we see that journey up close. We work alongside refugees, asylees and other immigrants as they build new lives in Oregon, helping with housing, employment, cultural orientation, case management, legal services and the many practical challenges that come with settling in a new place.

Every person arrives with a different story. Our job is to meet them with dignity, compassion and the support they need to build stability and belonging in their new community.

This National Migration Week, we celebrate what newcomers bring to Oregon and the stronger communities we build when everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

The need for food assistance is growing, and we’re getting ready to open our doors again.

In June, our first Pop-Up Food Pantry served 117 households and more than 400 people in just a few hours. Next month, we’re doing it again.

Across Oregon and Southwest Washington, visits to food assistance sites have risen 51% in just two years, reaching a record 2.9 million visits last year, according to the Oregon Food Bank’s 2026 State of Hunger report. Rising costs for food, housing and other essentials continue to put pressure on household budgets.

⏰ 3–6 p.m.
📍 Clark Family Center, 2740 SE Powell Blvd., Portland

The pantry is intended primarily for CCO clients and residents, who will be prioritized. But no one in need will be turned away.

Want to help us make it happen?

Volunteer: We need help setting up, welcoming participants, distributing food and cleaning up. Sign up through the volunteer link in our bio. catholiccharitiesoregon.org/services/volunteer/
Donate: We’re collecting nonperishable, unexpired food to help stock the pantry. To arrange a donation drop-off, contact [email protected].

Food insecurity can affect families, older adults, people experiencing homelessness and neighbors who simply can’t make rising costs stretch far enough. Together, we can help put more food within reach.

A change to federal immigration policy took effect last week, expanding the types of public benefits immigration officers may consider in some green-card and visa decisions.

The new “public charge” process can include certain health care, food, housing, cash and childcare assistance. But receiving benefits does not automatically mean someone will be denied a green card, and public charge rules do not apply to everyone.

Oregon is among the states challenging the change, citing concerns about its impact on immigrant families and communities.

Most importantly, families need to know they should not stop using benefits they need based on fear or uncertainty. Eligibility for benefits has not changed, and many immigrants are exempt from public charge rules.

If you receive services through Catholic Charities of Oregon and have questions about what these changes mean for your family, check in with your case manager or Refugee Services team. We can help connect you with trusted information and additional resources when needed.

We’re almost there.

We’re just $10,000 away from reaching our Summer of Stability goal.

Every gift gets us closer. And every dollar adds up to something meaningful:. A safe place to sleep, food on the table, help navigating a difficult moment or the support someone needs to move toward greater stability.

If you’ve been thinking about giving, now is a wonderful time. Help us close that final $10,000 and finish the Summer of Stability strong.

Can you help us get there?

Today marks the beginning of Hispanic and Latiné Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the histories, cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latiné communities across the country.

At Catholic Charities of Oregon, these communities are part of who we are. They are our colleagues, clients, partners, volunteers and neighbors.

Throughout our work, we see every day how language, culture and trusted relationships can help people access resources, understand their rights and feel at home in their communities.

Over the next month, we look forward to sharing some of the people and stories behind that work.

What does it mean to feel welcome?

Welcoming Week began last Thursday, bringing communities across Portland together to celebrate our immigrant and refugee neighbors and build a city where everyone can feel safe, supported and at home.

Today’s focus is education, with free virtual sessions covering Know Your Rights, Oregon’s hate crime and bias reporting resources, and sanctuary laws. These are especially important conversations at a time when many immigrant families are navigating uncertainty and rapidly changing policies.

At Catholic Charities of Oregon, welcoming newcomers is part of what we do every day.

Through Refugee Services, we help refugees and other eligible newcomers rebuild their lives in Oregon, connecting families with housing, food, health care, schools, employment resources, English-language instruction and ongoing case management.

And via Immigration Legal Services, our law firm within CCO, attorneys and accredited representatives help immigrants and refugees navigate the legal system, reunite families, pursue citizenship and other immigration benefits, and seek protection when they are especially vulnerable.

Welcoming is more than saying, “You belong here.” It’s helping make sure our neighbors have the information, resources and support to build a life here.
