Rabbit Rescue and Roundup, Part 2

We've been busy the last few weeks rescuing rabbits from a park and campground in the Columbia River Gorge. We've rescued 23 so far, and hope to rescue many more. The bunnies, some as young as a few months, are part of a colony that probably started when a few rabbits were dumped three or more years ago. Here are intake photos for a mama and her two babies and 10 more of the rabbits we rescued. One of the young girls had TWO infected wounds from botfly larvae. The botfly wounds are healing up, and the little girl is enjoying (or at least sweetly tolerating) her cherry-flavored antibiotic and honey-flavored pain medicine. Although scared when they were caught, most of these buns (especially the youngsters) are very friendly now (especially if there's food involved) and receptive to strokes on the head and gentle ear massages.

Every bunny will get vaccinated, spayed/neutered if/when they're old enough, and held in foster homes until they're adopted. This large and ongoing effort, on top of our regular rescue and rehoming activities, is a significant and unanticipated expense. Your donations truly help and are greatly appreciated. Here are intake photos for 10 of the first rabbits we rescued. The adults have dirty coats and ears, and the boy's ears are torn from fighting, but everybun appears in pretty good health. Although scared when they were caught, most of these buns (especially the youngsters) are very friendly now (especially if there's food involved) and receptive to strokes on the head and gentle ear massages.

We can't share this enough. Don't fall for the cute packaging. NO seeds, nuts, peas, corn, carrots, or treats!

We were recently contacted by a family who generously offered to donate some supplies after their beloved bunny passed away.
Whenever we receive donations like this, we ask if they could share the cause of death if it is known.
We were heartbroken and shocked when we learned what had happened to their bunny. 😞💔
After spending approximately $4,000 on emergency veterinary care and surgery, their precious bunny sadly did not survive. 😞
The family has given us permission to share their painful experience in the hope that other rabbit parents can learn from it and potentially prevent another tragedy.
They had been feeding their rabbit a pellet mix that contained seeds.
During surgery, the veterinarian removed an undigested seed that had become lodged in the bunny’s small intestine. They hoped she would recover, but unfortunately, she passed away. 💔According to the family, a necropsy later confirmed that the intestinal blockage was caused by an undigested seed.💔💔
What makes this especially upsetting is that many products marketed as “complete & balanced” rabbit food contain seeds, corn, colorful pieces, and other ingredients that may lead rabbit owners to believe they are appropriate.
We cannot blame this family. The package had a picture of a rabbit on it.
It is completely understandable that someone would assume a product specifically marketed for rabbits is safe for rabbits.
A good-quality rabbit pellet should be uniform and should not contain whole seeds, corn kernels, dried peas, nuts, or colorful treat pieces. Rabbits have a specialized herbivorous digestive system designed primarily for a high-fiber diet. Hard, indigestible pieces can contribute to serious gastrointestinal problems, including potentially life-threatening obstruction.
Please be especially cautious with foods containing whole seeds or hard hulls. If you are unsure whether a food or treat is appropriate for your rabbit, speak with a rabbit-savvy veterinarian rather than relying solely on the picture or marketing on the package.
Please help us share this family’s story and educate other bunny parents. Something being sold for rabbits does not automatically mean it is a good or safe choice for them.
Our deepest condolences and gratitude go to this family for allowing us to share such a painful experience in the hope that it may help save another bunny.

On Day #3 of our Rabbit Rescue Round-Up & Rodeo in the Gorge, Julie caught two more youngsters, Amani and Kam. Both bunnies weigh just over 1 kg each. Amani has a crusty wound (or two) on their left side, which we'll check thoroughly tomorrow.

It was dark when we gave up for the night and fumbled to pack up the gear. We counted at least 12 more rabbits, in groups of one, two, or three, as we drove slowly through the fairgrounds and surrounding area. It's looking like this will be more of a rodeo than a round-up to capture all of these youngsters, adolescents, and adults.

Clara Bow was dumped out in the country. The homeowners took this video and then called us to come rescue her, and save their goats from this 4-pound terror!
