A community support non-profit Friends of Tryon Creek was founded in 1970 by a group of forward-thinking women who came together to preserve the forested canyon that borders Lake Oswego and Portland. Fifty years later, Friends of Tryon Creek envisions an inclusive community connected to this cherished urban forest now and for future generations.

We know it's not fall yet, but our Fall Nature Journaling class returns Friday, Sept 18th from 3-4:30pm. Join us!

Join local author and science illustrator Audrey Sauble to learn about nature journaling at Tryon Creek. Each class will introduce a variety of tools and techniques, and participants will learn to record their nature observations using both art and text. Basic art supplies will be available, but you are welcome to bring your own sketchbook and materials.

No artistic experience is required. When the weather permits, part of the class may be held outside.

All Ages are welcome to attend. Sliding scale fee $10-20.

Join Friends of Tryon Creek staff, members and the public for an early evening full moon hike to celebrate seasonal changes and the Tryon community.

Full Moon Hike
Friday, August 28th
7:30pm

Depending on group sizes, we usually hike for about 1 hour on a 1.5-mile loop down to the creek and back. We will stop along the way to share with each other and learn more about the forest plants and wildlife.

Wow! What an awesome summer camp season, filled with fun, excitement, learning, and adventure.

💚700 campers filled the park with their energy, willingness to learn, and a passion to enjoy the park and all its magnificence.

💚50 Friends Staff, Seasonal Instructors, and Volunteer Assistant Counselors made this amazing summer experience happen!

We hope you enjoy these last days of summer and look forward to seeing you in the forest again soon.

As we wrap up another successful campaign, we are full of thanks for the community of donors who continue to show up to support education programs at Tryon Creek.

Thanks to nearly 150 individual donors and matching support from the John D. Gray Friends of Tryon Creek Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation, together we raised over $75k to support future generations of environmental stewards.

Position description: This internship is intended for early-career individuals seeking opportunities to build skills in environmental restoration and education through targeted mentorship. Strong applicants would have an interest in community connection, Indigenous traditional ecological and cultural knowledge, and empowering the next generation of forest stewards through education. Any combination of professional, academic, and/or personal experience will be considered. Must be comfortable working outside in varied terrains and weather conditions.

Compensation: Monthly stipend of $2,016

Duration: October 7th – December 19th, 2026

Availability: Programming will take place Tuesday – Saturday between the hours of 8:00am and 4:00pm. Occasional weekend and evening availability is required. Not to exceed 32 hours per week.

Work Location: Tryon Creek State Natural Area, with occasional opportunities for professional development taking place off-site.
