The last PDX Spelling Bee was as sweet as I knew it would be—thanks to everyone who came out! And to those who wanted to be there but couldn’t (Tiffany Stevenson, Allen Hunter, Jessie Carver, and Justin Rigamonti), you were there in spirit! Joel Hess was the big winner, which was fitting, as he is the BEST SPELLER ON THE PLANET (or if not, definitely in the top five)! Runner up was Erica Witbeck, and the winner of the second bout was Sarah Baraff. Great job! Also, I will never forget the strange and wonderful pleasure of having a room full of people spell ELEPHANT backwards in unison. I mean, it was just so lovely. Thank you all for a great run, and keep in touch! ❤️
(And photo credits go to Alison Jean Cole, who captured Lisa Ward’s elegant exit from the stage. Love you both! 😘)
And thank you so much to Mississippi Pizza, Atlantis Lounge, and the incomparable bartending/kindness of Zander Emery!

Tomorrow night (Wednesday, June 14th) is our last PDX Spelling Bee (at least for now)! 6-7:30 at Mississippi Pizza; please come on out—I’d love to see you!
And this favorite photo was taken the moment after my new Goodwill belt unhooked itself and flew off (which was a surprise to all of us!). While I can’t promise any wardrobe malfunctions, I know tomorrow night will be as sweet and fun as it always is. $5 / kids under 12 free.

The last PDX Spelling Bee is next Wednesday, June 14th, so I’m revisiting some old Bee memories. Strange to think we (re)started in December 2021; originally we were gathering weekly, and at that time in the pandemic, we kept having to cancel due to spikes in cases in Multnomah County. The night of this first photo, there were only six of us, including the lovely Rini (Eva Rini May Cragg), a German filmmaker doing some scouting in Portland. She’d ended up at Mississippi Pizza (to charge her phone, if I remember, and we talked her into spelling. So much fun!
I have so many sweet memories of the last year and a half, and I will miss seeing you all every month. I hope you will join us next Wednesday to say goodbye! As always: 6-7:30; $5 (and kids under 12 free). And fun/spelling/friends/raffle, of course!

June 14th! Please come out for one last hurrah—you know the drill: $5 gets you spelling, laughing, raffle ticket, and who knows what else! (And if you have books you want to donate for the raffle, let me know!)

Oooh, that was a good one!!! Do I have pictures to prove it? Nope. Do I remember what the winning words were? Nope. Was it silly and fun and exciting? Yes! We celebrated birthdays, made new friends from La Grande, made fun of Trump, ate cake, laughed, and, of course, spelled! (We learned some great new new words, did we not? Like FRONDESCENCE?)
Okay, so the nights big winners were Sarah Baraff (Bout 1) and Micah Ewing (Bout 2). If anyone remembers the winning words or has photos to share, send ‘em my way! And we’ll see you again—for the last time (for awhile, at least) on Wednesday, June 14th—same time, same place. 🐝❤️✨

Tonight! Hope to see you!

Next Wednesday, May 10th, is PDX Spelling Bee! And it’s also your second to last chance to join us—I’m pausing the Bee after our June event (more on that later!). So if you’re a regular, or an occasional, or have been meaning to come, now’s the time! ❤️ And next Wednesday is also a birthday celebration for Matt Brown and Angel O’Brien, and you know what that means: there will be CAKE! 🎂
You know the drill—6-7:30, Mississippi Pizza, $5 (under 12 free). Come on out! (And as you may know, this is Polaris Hall, not Mississippi Pizza, but I love how Twin Peaks-y it is, and you’ve seen all the photos from last month! 😏)

Instead of bad lighting, I’m seeing this as a visitation by the spirit of spelling: can you see it? ✨ Such a fun night! Congratulations to Angel O’Brien, our first bout winner (woot!), and Sarah Bavaff and Micah Ewing who tied for the second bout (and even killed it spelling words sdrawkcab! (Get it? Backwards!) 😆 And that was the best rendition of “Happy Birthday” I’ve ever heard—it was wonderful to celebrate you, Ashley Henry! 💕

See you all next month—May 10th—same time, same place!

Do you know what’s coming? The April PDX Spelling Bee—Wednesday, April 12th from 6-7:30 at Mississippi Pizza! (We’re now meeting the second Wednesday of the month—put it in your calendar!) We’ll be celebrating a special birthday, so we’ll have some special celebratory rounds (spelling/drinks/both?), and also some fun new features, as well as our literary raffle. And this photo, by Justin Rigamonti, features last month’s winner (Liz Ruckh, left) and runner-up (Jon Love, right) of the second bout, who left with a gift certificate and t-shirt (and bragging rights). This could be you! Join us! 🐝
