Get dirty for GOOD!

Grab a friend, roll up your sleeves, and join hundreds of volunteers across the Willamette Valley for one big day of action for the river we love.

The Great Willamette Cleanup brings together Willamette Riverkeeper, community partners, and volunteers for on-land and on-water cleanups along the Willamette.
Together, we’ll remove trash, care for our river, meet some great people, and have plenty of fun along the way.

Cleanups run from morning through early afternoon. Then, at 1:30pm, it’s time to celebrate! Join us for volunteer appreciation parties in Portland, Corvallis, and Eugene (locations TBD).

Register for one of our clean up sites today, or contact us about adding your own!

Seeing the CEI Hub from the water changes your perspective.

Last night Willamette Riverkeeper staff joined our friends 350pdx - Washington CountyTeam to lead a canoe tour through Portland Harbor, giving participants a unique opportunity to experience the Willamette while learning about the Critical Energy Infrastructure (CEI) Hub.

Along this six-mile stretch of river sit hundreds of fossil fuel storage tanks located beside the Willamette and Forest Park. Participants learned about the environmental and climate impacts of the site, as well as the significant risks the area faces in the event of a major earthquake.

Experiences like this help connect people to the river while deepening our understanding of the challenges—and opportunities—to protect it for future generations.

Interested in touring this area? Join us in September when we’ll host another paddle!

What does river restoration look like?

Sometimes, it's long days in a canoe.

Over the past few weeks, our Restoration Team has paddled 91.5 river miles—from Peoria to Newberg—surveying for aquatic invasive plants, including yellow loosestrife and yellow floating heart.

It's meticulous work, slowly scanning the shoreline, hopping in and out of boats to investigate suspicious plants, and documenting what we find. The data we collect helps guide future restoration efforts, and in some cases our partners are able to treat invasive weeds on the spot.

This work would not be possible without the support of Oregon State W**d Board, Benton Soil & Water Conservation District, Yamhill Soil and Water Conservation District, Oregon State Parks, Oregon Department of Agriculture and our partners at Integrated Resource Management.

These organizations have granted funding, staff and volunteers, often working alongside us in the field, and sharing meals and stories with us at our shared Water Trail campsites.

There are still plenty of river miles ahead. If you see this crew on the water, give them a wave—they're working to keep the Willamette healthy for all of us.

Recently, we were thrilled to welcome 18 members of the Lake Oswego Teen Service Corps for a day of paddling, learning, and hands-on river stewardship.

After working on some basic canoe and river safety skills, we paddled to Sellwood Beach in SE Portland. There, students teamed up to remove trash and help care for the Willamette's shoreline.

Their enthusiasm and teamwork were a great reminder that protecting our river can be both meaningful and fun!

This program was made possible through a 2026 SPLASH Grant from our friends at the West Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District.

THANK YOU for investing in Willamette Riverkeeper as we aim to inspire the NEXT generation of Willamette River stewards!
