Heading now for 90 years and then a Century of Mayor Baxter Woods! Thank you to everyone who attended yesterday’s 80th anniversary celebration. Special shout-outs to Sean (+Bettina, Hannah, Antonio and Val…) and the Honorable Herb Adams! Our enter/info-tainers for the event regaled us with song and story and a reminder to remember the ones we have lost and those people, ideas, spirit and creatures we hold dear forever!

Incredibly I think the warmth of our being together did something to help dry-up the morning drizzle in the region, and unexpectedly we had an amazing sunny, Maine Spring day!

It sure was a bustling event with all the song, dance and shared remembrance of the past 80 years in these Woods. The celebration was made even more special with our beloved animal family members milling about. My Marco dog was sure pining for a morsel of a Tony’s donut the entire time. He got only one from me! 🥴

Thanks and gratitude to the clean-up crew for hauling out at least one full bag of garbage! It may not be devoid of trash, but the consensus is for the most part Mayor Baxter Woods is pretty and pretty-clean! Let’s keep trying to maintain these beautiful Woods as Gov. Baxter wanted it - a wild and natural place! It is my firm belief that Gov. Baxter would be delighted to see how Mayor Baxter Woods has evolved since 1946! But I also believe he would wonder about a few things, such as the oppressive leash law enforcement, and why the Woods are so empty most of the time. These may be the challenges MBW faces as we move forward into the next decade. Be well!!

I learned today that a man posted this threatening sign on a tree in Baxter Woods by the Percival St. lot on 11/19. A friend of the Woods posted it to the City Fix It site. This threat is very disturbing!

If anyone knows who that man is please reach out to the Parks Department at 207-808-5400, or through the fix it site.

Today marks 6 years of the Friends of Mayor Baxter Woods as a group! We formed originally to work with the City on how it was going to establish the first ever dog leash law in Baxter Woods. City staff never intended to work with us though and the fight to preserve our right to walk freely, mornings and evenings during the summer months, in Baxter Woods with dogs off-leash continues. Message me if you have any questions about all that.

Despite the City’s leash law recalcitrance - we thank them and you all for helping sustain this community park as a beautiful haven in the middle of Maine’s largest city. While there are some problems or issues that occur there, as they do at any public gathering place over time, I still think Governor Percival P. Baxter would be proud of the park he gifted to the people of Portland in honor of his late father Mayor James P. Baxter in 1946!

So I only realized today as we were leaving the Woods and back to the car that we were not breaking the law. I totally forgot about the August 1st celebration of Freedom to walk off leash again in Baxter Woods!

While Baxter Woods is beautiful as always, I still say the effects of stupid leash rules and banning off-leash walks are insidious!
