Persephone‘s Journey

Wood- block ink print


The print is based on the Homeric Myth found in the Hymn to Demeter in which the beautiful Persephone is abducted by the god of the underworld, Hades, and held captive as his bride. Persephone‘s Journey represents the human spiritual journey of seduction, fall from grace, and redemption; of innocence tricked into tasting of evil, and the lifelong consequences of that conscious act. Persephone ate the pomegranate seeds just as Adam ate the forbidden apple, a conscious decision that permitted evil permanent residence in the soul. Depicted in Persephone‘s Journey is the cohabitation of good and evil in all of us, and deliberate balance each soul makes to their daily actions. This very human balance distinguishes individuals uniquely. Like Persephone, we all are a spiritual journey initiated, directed, and defined by our intentions and actions.

Animust

Animust’s symbolism represents the innate combination of anima (female) and animus (male) in all of us using complementary overlapping images.
Animust is product of the design and placement strategies of multiple images on the two zinc plates. The grouping of images was made mindful of leaving space and creating engaging visual clusters. Hard ground was used to etch to two plate, separating the images by animus and anima. To define the image lines, I acid dipped for around 6 minutes and felt the depth of the etching to be adequate.
The next process is adding some selective perspective to the images (sparse) using sugar-lift during the background aquatinting; my goal was to achieve a fluid aquatinted background.

During my early adulthood, one of my dearest friends, Timothy Dunleavy, created the nickname to humble my all too often creative or intellectual exuberances: Tad Bright; Brad Bleidt is just a “tad bright”. “He’s just a tad bright “can be heard to this day when I begin to over-promote. Nearly a decade ago that friend passed and in his memory, I’ve tried to create a representation of that spirit in the encompassing creativity corporation, Tad Bright Abstractions, Inc.

A residential facility located in Seaside Oregon serving a population of men, 18 and older, with co-occurring disorders including substance abuse and significant psychological/ behavioral issues. Restoration House, Inc. offers a safe, stable, and sober place to live while attempting to meet the needs of this under-served, high risk, and high cost population. Restoration House, Inc.’s vision is to form a cohesive plan of future care that supports clients holistically while reducing recidivism and assuring overall community safety.

Objects of Affection Project (2010-2013)

Persephone's Penitential Assignment

To draw the object of affection as seen by the loving one's eye. To transcend the physical and see the true beauty in every woman, every person; the beauty behind the veil: selflessness, compassion, love.
During a three-year period, I rendered 120 graphic and charcoal portraits from photos of individuals' objects of affection.
When I draw an individual from a photo, it takes about 8 to 10 hours of solid concentration. I'm truly learning to draw what I see, not stored mental images; this is a never-ending process. The focus brings me in touch with the model's spirit via some mechanism I've yet to determine. By completion, I feel like I know the person.

All represent the focal points of my creative development and are
uniquely interwoven to produce abstractions from my life’s experiences and solutions. A musical performance, a painting/sketch/ graphic image, and a business consultation all are born out of equal
passion and the mosaic of their interaction depicts humanity and a wide range of spiritual and ethical expressions.

I’m always practicing and hoping to attract inspiration.
