Our hearts are with Bend and all of Central Oregon.
The ALSO community is grieving alongside the families, students, educators and staff, and neighbors affected by yesterday’s tragedy at Silver Rail Elementary.

To our Central Oregon team, the people we support, their families, and the greater Bend community: we are here for you, today and throughout the long road to healing ahead.

For those who experience disabilities and their loved ones, the details of this tragedy may bring added confusion, pain, and fear. In this moment, as we hold space for grief, we are also considering what more we can do to ensure the safety of the people we support and our Advocate team members. This includes strengthening our individualized emergency response and shelter-in-place preparedness for those we support, continuing to urge public leaders to build emergency response systems that center people with disabilities, who are often overlooked; and being present with those we support to understand what emotional and mental health care they may need as they learn about and process this tragedy.

For our team members feeling the impact of this tragedy, we encourage you to care for your own and your family’s emotional and mental health needs, something those in direct care often deprioritize. If you aren’t sure what’s available in terms of benefits and resources, please check in with your manager or our Advocates Relations team.

We are deeply grateful to the first responders who answered the call and who will carry this tragic experience with them. And we share gratitude and compassion for the individual whose heroism stopped the shooter and prevented further tragedy.

Deschutes County and school district are organizing comfort and healing events and posting resources, and we’re resharing them here:

❤️ This week, we celebrate the people at the heart of direct support.

Our DSPs show up every day with patience, compassion, creativity, and care. They build relationships, share everyday moments, celebrate accomplishments, work through challenges, and help create opportunities for people to live, connect, explore, and belong in ways that are meaningful to them.

So much of this work happens in moments that may seem small, but those moments matter. A shared laugh. A new experience. Encouragement when something is hard. Being there, listening, and supporting someone in the way they choose.

To every DSP at ALSO, thank you for the trust you build, the care you give, and the heart you bring to this work every day. We are incredibly grateful for you. ❤️

Inclusive Housing in Action

ALSO is honored to be recognized with the Kuni Foundation Innovation Award for Inclusive Housing, celebrating work that creates more accessible, affordable, and community-connected housing opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

One example of that vision is The Montage Apartments in Gresham, a new affordable housing community currently under construction.

The Montage will include 39 apartments, with 10 homes reserved for people with I/DD, and Universal Design principles incorporated throughout the building.

At ALSO, inclusive housing is about much more than having a place to live.

It means having a home where you can make your own choices, have privacy, build relationships with neighbors, participate in your community, and receive the support you choose based on what works for you.

We are grateful to the Kuni Foundation and Housing Oregon for recognizing the importance of inclusive housing and helping shine a light on what is possible.

The Montage is estimated to open in 2027.

Spotlight: Meet Forrest!
Forrest began his employment journey cleaning the courthouse after hours, but he dreamed of being part of a team where he could make friends. That opportunity came when he joined Pilot Flying J.

Now, three years later, Forrest has built lasting friendships with both coworkers and customers. He’s known for his kindness, his positive presence, and the pride he takes in his work. Whether he’s greeting someone with a smile or carefully detailing the showers for truck drivers, Forrest makes sure everyone feels welcomed and cared for.

Thank you, Forrest, for showing how inclusion at work creates stronger teams and brighter days for everyone.
