Taking a moment to use our platform to lift Indigenous voices. Here’s an amazing, well-worded post regarding the sexualization of Indigenous women and the harm of using their culture as Halloween costumes. As feminists, we MUST practice intersectional feminism and stand with indigenous women.

“The sexualization of Indigenous women is incredibly damaging to Native communities, yet is rampant in mainstream media.

Cultural appropriation upholds damaging stereotypes about Indigenous people, while also supporting the idea that Indigenous women exist to feed sexual fantasies. Through Halloween costumes and stereotypes like the “Indian princess”, Native women are demeaned and fetishized. We must continue to question the media, educate ourselves on Native culture, and call out cultural appropriation to put an end to this issue.

Indigenous women are strong, resilient, and courageous. We don’t exist to feed your fantasies.

Gender constructs are part of colonialism framework, let’s talk about this.

Despite the myth that “transgender is a new age concept.” Here’s some worldwide insight and indigenous history!

Upon further research, we’d also like to add some extra content that this post doesn’t represent on its own:

- In Indonesia, the Bugis people believe in five genders; makkunrai, oroani, calabai, calalai and bissu (transgender priests).

-The indigenous peoples of the Caribbean and Florida, the Taíno peoples, before enslaved by Columbus & his men (yeah great guy, we should give him a holiday); also had a mutability of genders, coining the term “maorocoti” for non-binary.

- The Ticuna tribe in Colombia is a gender fluid tribe in the Amazon. They are the indigenous peoples of Brazil, Columbia and Peru.

If you know of anymore gender fluid or transgender history, please share below! ⬇️ 🌈

“For white people, Juneteenth should not be a day of celebration, but one of service.”

Here are some ways that white people can “celebrate” Juneteenth:

1. Support Black businesses and creators. Donate to re-distribute white wealth into Black communities and provide reparations.

2. Pay for a Black family’s meal, grocery tab, etc.

3. If you don’t have the budget; you can provide an act or acts of service to your Black friends. Watch their kids, help with their business plan, or catch up on things around the house.

Thanks Danielle S. for your message and graphics! We hope to represent your message properly. Check her out at Mamademics.com.

In Texas, starting 9/1/21, you could be legally sued for taking your friend to the abortion clinic.

Abortion bans are unconstitutional, but Texas (along with many other states) continues to try & remove access to abortions. Unfortunately I don’t believe writing legislators would be of any use at this time. This bill is set to take effect September 1, 2021. Planned Parenthood is taking the leading role in pursuing legal actions; let’s support them with donations!

Extra content to think about:
Lubbock, Texas has declared itself a "Sanctuary City for the unborn." They have outlawed abortion entirely. Regardless of gestation, it is considered and tried as murder.

At the close of each PDXFem meeting - we try to leave on a positive affirmation or mantra. Here’s one from a previous meeting that sticks with me everyday.
It’s so important to put our creative work out there. Our words, art, our talents & optimism. The energy from our creations spread & we hope this finds you where it needs to ❤️

We stand in solidarity with Palestine as they’re facing genocide by Israel. The United States provides over $3 billion in foreign military funding to Israel - this is unacceptable! We need to bring attention to this and let our executive administration know that we stand in solidarity with Palestine. Use your social media to let know that they need to take action and aid the Palestinians. Here’s how you can help:

We’ve talked about Alternative Policing and ways to avoid calling the police. Now let’s talk about how we can take steps towards minimizing Police Brutality.
- Pass legislation that holds Police accountable, sentencing them for murdering civilians and changing use-of-force regulations.
- Reducing the presence of police in our communities. This starts with alternative policing.
- Defund the police! Reallocate the millions of dollars into affordable housing, drug & mental health treatments, crisis intervention specialists, and other social services.
- Abolish. Reform hasn’t been enough in the past. Funding more police trainings like diversity and de-escalation training isn’t working. Police were first established as slave catchers and it often seems that their role hasn’t strayed far from that. Abolitionists believe this is the only way and have valid historical analysis to support this view.

What do you think should be the first step towards ending police violence?

We’re over $200 closer to our goal after our donation based bake sale! ♡
If 12 people each donate $10, we’ll make our goal of raising $1,000 for abortion access! You can donate here https://fund.nnaf.org/ProChoicePDX

Here are [some of] the smiling faces behind the screen! We’re missing our fourth PDXFem member and there are so many faces that worked hard to make this bake sale happen! Thanks to everyone who came out & everyone who made this possible. We appreciate you 💖

Did you know that there have been more Anti-Trans bills & laws introduced in 2021, than any other year in US History? We’re only 4 months in. This is a state of crisis & emergency in the Trans Community. As allies and friends, let’s do what we can to support. Here’s how to help! ♡

Reflecting on our name, we wanted to clarify that our group is not just “female” oriented. Our goal is to uplift humans of all groups. When we say that we are feminists, we mean that we are advocates for the equality and liberation of female-identifying, non-binary and q***r folks. We practice intersectional feminism, because we don’t believe that feminism exist without intersectionalism. PDXFem is focused on bringing awareness and community action to the oppression of marginalized groups.

With that being said, we truly encourage feedback from our followers. Let us know how we can be more inclusive, how we could better word things, or how we could better represent your sexual, gender or racial identity. Constructive criticism is needed for growth, so please be kind & let us know how we can do better. ❤️
