Portland CT Social Justice Coalition

Portland CT Social Justice Coalition PSJC shares community events, initiatives and resources from the Portland Committee on Solidarity and beyond. We look forward to hearing from you!

Learn more about the committee: https://www.portlandct.org/solidarity-task-force The Portland Social Justice Coalition was created in July 2020 in Portland, CT. The Coalition was formed in response to protests against police violence and systemic racism across our country and conversations here in town about social justice issues which affect our own community. We are a non-partisan, growing netw

ork of Portland residents, parents, employees, former students, and community members who are dedicated to helping our town be the best it can be. Our mission is to identify the needs of our community by listening, learning and having the difficult conversations necessary to empower our fellow community members to raise their voices and begin to bridge the gaps to create a more equitable, inclusive community. We host monthly meetings on Zoom, and we have formed an education workgroup which focuses on supporting our school district in its efforts toward equity and inclusion. The Coalition has also partnered with the Portland Library to create the Portland Forum, a series of discussions that focus on representing the countless faces of diversity, through books and other media. You can learn more about Portland Forum meetings on the library's website, portlandlibraryct.org or by calling 860-342-6770. If you would like to join our network, or learn more about the Portland Social Justice Coalition, please reach out to us at [email protected]. The more community members that join us, the stronger we will become and the greater the positive impact will be on our town.

Thank you to John Mills for his tireless work to uncover the stories of Black patriots across our state. People who fought for our country and for freedom for all - some of whom were then forced back into slavery. True heroes who we should all learn about.

I was a little nervous about how my 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆 address would go at the Wethersfield Parade today. My words were heavy on re-inserting the marginalized back into our history. I reminded the audience that today is the 126th anniversary of 𝗦𝗴𝘁. 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗺 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 receiving the Medal of honor.. a formerly enslaved man who became the first black man to receive this award. He received the award for ensuring the American Flag did not touch the ground while the 54th Massachusetts Colored Regiment stormed the beaches of Morris Island. He held the flag steady even though he was wounded. I shared with them the story of 𝗝𝗼𝘀𝗵𝘂𝗮 𝗢𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿, a Wethersfield resident who served in the 29th Connecticut Colored Regiment during the Civil War, dying in Texas just prior to the regiments return to Connecticut. I shared with the audience that Joshua was the great-grandson of 𝗦𝘆𝗽𝗵𝗮𝘅 𝗠𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘆, an enslaved man who enlisted during the Revolutionary War in place of his enslaver as a means to gain his freedom.

I ultimately reminded the audience that telling a fuller story does not diminish America… it strengthens it. It shows we recognize our history, and we’re not afraid to acknowledge it. We understand that all aspects of our history serve as critical ingredients to what has produced a great nation.

I was appreciative that my speech was received incredibly well. I took a picture with Connecticut Senator 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻 𝗙𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗮 as a memento of such a wonderful day. 🙏🏿
