It costs a state about $165,000 to build one new affordable housing unit. In Washington, Oregon, and California, closer to $400,000 to $700,000.

It costs about $7,000 a year to bring home sharing to an entire community. We think both numbers matter, and both belong in the same conversation.

This is not an argument against building. It is an argument against waiting while you do.

A third of older households pay more for housing than they can comfortably afford.

Here is the comparison that makes the case: older adults living with a housemate are cost-burdened at 29 percent. Living alone, it is 46 percent. That gap is the entire economic argument for home sharing, in two numbers.
