Safe at Play is a non-profit organization that was incorporated on April 12, 2016. Safe at Play was founded on the desire to educate schools, parents, children, and the community at large on the vital importance of playground safety after founders, Lee Andree and Latanya DeBruhl’s daughter, Andrea Tyrah DeBruhl, passed away on February 1, 2016 as a result of asphyxia when she became entangled in t

he monkey bars on her public school's playground during recess. It is the mission, duty, and purpose of Safe at Play to (1) increase awareness in the prevention of unintentional childhood playground injuries due to lack of or improper supervision, failure to ensure usage of age appropriate equipment, and failure to maintain and inspect equipment by a certified playground inspector, (2) to decrease the number of resulting deaths and disabilities associated with childhood playground "accidents" in children under the age of 12, (3) to advocate at the local, state, and national level for safe playgrounds and accountability for adult supervisors, (4) to increase awareness that active supervision is a critical component to the safety of children by which supervising adults must be held accountable for the safety of children, (5) to increase awareness of the importance of designing, selecting, and using age appropriate equipment located in separate play areas for different age groups, (6) to increase awareness of the importance of playground inspections conducted by a Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) to ensure proper maintenance and that each playground meets the current national standards set by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), (7) to promote safety and prevention programs including, but not limited to, First Aid, CPR, and AED training, (8) and to pay forward charitable help and services to the community and those in need in honor of Andrea Tyrah DeBruhl. This is a page for those interested in helping Safe at Play create a world where there are no more needless childhood playground injuries, disabilities, and deaths. At our request, Governor Brian Kemp has proclaimed April 20–24, 2026, as Playground Safety Week in Georgia.

National Playground Safety Week, established in 1997 by the National Program for Playground Safety (NPPS), encourages parents, guardians, caretakers, and supervisors to take extra precautions to keep children safe and injury‑free. We extend our appreciation to all the adults who work year‑round to maintain playgrounds and ensure they remain safe, welcoming spaces for every child.

Facts... "Playground equipment will not supervise children. Supervision is more than being there. It is the careful and unobtrusive monitoring of the play environment to promote safe behaviors and help prevent injuries."

In 1996, the National Program for Playground Safety (NPPS) developed a National Action Plan (NAP) that was intended to be a blueprint to help local public entities (schools, childcare centers, and parks) create safe play environments for children (Thompson & Hudson).
