Minds Matter Southern California

Minds Matter Southern California Minds Matter supports students in their sophomore, junior, and senior years.

Minds Matter connects driven and determined students from low-income families with the people, preparation, and possibilities to succeed in college, create their future, and change the world. Our program offers a unique combination of mentoring support, group instruction, and social-emotional learning. We provide students with the resources and guidance needed to gain admission, enroll, and succee

d at rigorous four-year colleges. Support continues during college with internships, professional skills-building, and access to our alumni platform. We are dedicated to helping students unleash their talent and potential, nurturing them to become not just college graduates, but leaders who can help shine the light for future generations.

✨ “You helped me believe…” 💙

Sometimes the most powerful impact isn’t just helping students get to college. It’s helping them see what’s possible for themselves.

Damari’s words remind us that mentorship, support, and community can shape so much more than academic outcomes. They can build confidence, expand dreams, and help students believe they are capable of reaching goals that once felt out of reach. 🎓✨

To every mentor, volunteer, educator, and supporter who continues to show up for young people: thank you for helping students imagine bigger futures for themselves.

The Minds Matter team recently traded laptops for rolling pins and learning how to make pasta from scratch! Turns out the secret ingredient to great teamwork is pasta. 🍝

Our staff spent the day learning how to make the real deal kneading, rolling, laughing, and stepping outside our comfort zones. The best part was discovering fun, new ways to connect and work together.

Flour‑covered and fully bonded, it was the perfect reset as we look ahead to rolling out our seven‑year program.

Before the roles and the titles, we were kids, too. 🤗

That’s why we show up with care, consistency, and belief in every student we serve.
Because someone did that for us. And now, we do it for them.

There are many reasons why people volunteer, and everyone brings something unique: to give back, to find meaning, to lift someone up, to meet new people, to grow. Together, they create the community that makes our students feel seen, supported, and capable of anything.

When you volunteer with Minds Matter, you’re not just giving your time. You’re building relationships that matter. You’re learning from the resilience of our students. You’re joining a circle of people who believe in possibility and show up for one another.

Whether you’re looking to grow, to connect, or simply to make a difference in someone’s life, there’s a place for you here.

A huge thank you to the Hilton Foundation for welcoming our students and opening their doors to such a powerful learning experience.

Our visit offered a rare look into the Foundation’s philanthropic mission and the values that guide its work. The students explored what it means to build a career in philanthropy, how investment fuels long‑term social change, and how strategy comes to life when organizations partner with experts and community leaders.

Hearing directly from the panelists, they gained insight into how the Foundation shapes its priorities, who contributes to those decisions, and how diverse voices are brought into the conversation. They also walked away with a deeper understanding of leadership, the kind rooted in service, collaboration, and a commitment to community.

We’re grateful to the Hilton Foundation for giving our students the chance to imagine themselves in roles that shape the future. Experiences like this expand their sense of possibility and remind them that they belong in every room where impact is made.

April is volunteering month, and we want to say thank you to everyone who makes the magic that is Minds Matter happen.

Every week, our volunteers show up with curiosity, patience, and a belief in our students' potential. They’re the steady voices during college essays, the calm presence during tough decisions, and the cheerleaders who celebrate every win — big or small.

And here’s the real magic: Our volunteers don’t just guide our students — they grow alongside them. They build meaningful relationships, strengthen their own leadership and communication skills, and become part of a community that shows up for one another just as much as it shows up for our students.

This month, we’re celebrating the people who make our program feel alive — the mentors, writing coaches, SEL facilitators, test-prep tutors, and other volunteers who help our students see their own magic a little more clearly each week.

We can’t say thank you enough for all you do and who you are.
