Students will focus on how the political process operates in state government. Topics will include – law, civil service, election procedures, and parliamentary procedures. There will be detailed explanation of the legislative, executive and judicial procedures of state government.
• Objectives: Students will develop an understanding of how state government works and appreciate the democratic pr
ocess in American government.
• Activities: Students will participate in New Mexico Boys/Girls State. Through role playing and other functional activities students will learn about elections, caucuses, conventions, operation of the courts, legislative assemblies, law enforcement and public welfare.
• College Credit Hours: Students will receive 3 college credits upon certification of attendance, participation and satisfactory completion of the program. College credits can be transferred to any college or university.
• Registration and tuition fees: The American Legion, Department of New Mexico & the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of New Mexico will pay all registration costs to include room & board, meals and transportation to and from Portales. Boys State participants are asked to pay a $25.00 fee for “t-shirts” to be worn throughout the week and at recreation.
• Extra Curricular Activities: Participants are encouraged to join the “band” or be part of the annual Talent Show.
