This Day in History: I am sure MANY of you remember this! It was on June 22, 1972 when the “Flood of ‘72” brought chaos and devastation to the Southern Tier and Genesee Valley as flooding rains from Hurricane Agnes hit Northern Pennsylvania and Southern New York. Areas along the Susquehanna River, Chemung River and Genesee River were heavily impacted, resulting in unimaginable damage and numerous fatalities. Some areas received nearly TWO FEET of rain. The unprecedented rainfall caused catastrophic flooding. This was the most destructive flooding in New York history to date and the most expensive natural disaster in American history. Agnes caused over $3 billion in damage (over $20.6 billion in today's dollars) and five states were designated as disaster areas. I am sure many of you have memories of this week in June of 1972 and the days that followed. Please share your recollections here in the comments section. This is the Genesee Falls Inn along the Genesee River near Portageville, NY. Amazing to see the comparison of what it was and what it normally is like. A marker inside the front door at the foyer there demonstrates just how high the flooding water was.
