On September 29th, Maynor visited with Aquiles, who lives in Lomas de Cafen near Teustepe, Nicaragua. Aquiles is a farmer who is interested in the Nicaragua Bee Project and has been helping Ismael, a new beekeeper with his 2 hives in Pena de Cafe.
Maynor discussed the project with Aquiles and they conducted a field study to determine if there was sufficient water and flowering vegetation for bees.
Aquiles will meet with the Americans at the end of October when the team from USA is in Nicaragua and will receive his training, bees and beekeeping equipment.

Maynor also visited Ricardo, a new beekeeper in the Boaco, Nicaragua area. It has been raining in the area and so Ricardo's avocado and passion fruit plantations have begun to bloom and the bees are busy collecting pollen. The queens are laying eggs at an accelerated rate and the nectar flow is also strong.
Ricardo hopes to do divisions by the end of this year. That will increase his colonies to 4.

Last Sunday, September 27th, Maynor visited Marcos, a new beekeeper in Barraco Alto. Marcos couldn't join Maynor to check the colonies as he was recovering from chikungunya, so Marcos' dad Carlos went with Maynor to the bee yard.
They have been getting some good heavy rains so the vegetation has improved and the beehives have undergone significant change. The bees are bringing in pollen.
Carlos is very happy with what he has seen as the colonies are getting stronger. He has planted watermelons and so the bees will not be lacking pollen in the coming months.

Last week Maynor also visited with Gregorio in the community of El Ventarron, near Teustepe, Nicaragua to see how he is doing with his bees. And to see how Joseu, Gregorio's son, is learning beekeeping from his father.
Joseu doesn't have his bee suit yet, so he's wearing an adult-sized jacket which covers him up almost completely.
Steven from Ohio has donated funds to purchase a bee suit for Joseu and I am bringing it down with me when we head down to Nicaragua on October 25th. I'll be sure to take a picture of Joseu in his new bee suit and gloves.
Joseu has learned to use the smoker correctly.
The hives have been doing quite well and the queen bee is laying eggs as flowering is beginning to appear.
It's always rewarding to see the children (boys and girls) of our beekeepers take an interest in beekeeping

This past week, Maynor visited new beekeeper Ismael in Pena de Cafe near Boaco, Nicaragua.
The winter in the mountains has been very mild due to El Nino. It hasn't rained heavily as usual which gave the bees the opportunity to gather pollen and nectar.
Ismael has been feeding his bees as a precaution to ensure his hives are strong as the flowering season begins in a couple months.

The colonies of Miriam are very strong. She attended the training we gave last February 2026 on Ometepe Island, Nicaragua. Her son Kevin helps her with the bees.
The colonies look strong with good population but no reserve of food, so Bismar recommended they continue to feed the colonies until there is ample pollen and nectar in the area.
Miriam found a swarm of bees and Mario helped put them in a nuc box. Now she has 3 colonies of bees and very happy.

Sergio lives in Monte Fresco, a community on Ometepe Island in Nicaragua. He received his training and colonies of bees after the training in February 2026. His son Hector helps him with the bees.
Sergio lost one colony of bees so Mario, our project representative on Ometepe Island will bring a colony next to Sergio's colony to exchange a frame of pupa to strengthen Sergio's colony.

Maynor also visited new beekeeper Gregorio in the community of El Baqueron in the Teustepe area.
The drought in Nicaragua continues but near the lake there are many crops of squash, melons, corn and wheat so the bees have been bringing pollen back to the hives.
Maynor has shown Gregorio how to feed his colonies with bottle feeders and Gregorio has seen good results with the feeding technique.
At this moment, Gregorio is harvesting his watermelons which have been pollinated by his bees.

Maynor visited new beekeepers Ismael and Jairo in Pena de Cafen in the Boaco Departmento of Nicaragua.
The flowering and pollen has started but there still is no nectar. So they are feeding sugared syrup to their colonies.
They are waiting for us to come visit them in late October and learn how to harvest pollen.

Lastly Bismar visited with Sergio and his son Hector at Montefresco on Ometepe Island, Nicaragua. Sergio is also a first year beekeeper and received his colonies through the Tim Taber Memorial Fund.
Sergio is a carpenter so he made some equipment for his bees.
Like the other beekeepers on Ometepe Island, the colonies need food as the rainy season has not been cooperative. Sergio has a cornfield next to the hives and Bismar observed the bees returning to the hives with pollen from the corn flowers.
