Maynor also visited new beekeeper Gregorio in the community of El Baqueron in the Teustepe area.
The drought in Nicaragua continues but near the lake there are many crops of squash, melons, corn and wheat so the bees have been bringing pollen back to the hives.
Maynor has shown Gregorio how to feed his colonies with bottle feeders and Gregorio has seen good results with the feeding technique.
At this moment, Gregorio is harvesting his watermelons which have been pollinated by his bees.

Maynor visited new beekeepers Ismael and Jairo in Pena de Cafen in the Boaco Departmento of Nicaragua.
The flowering and pollen has started but there still is no nectar. So they are feeding sugared syrup to their colonies.
They are waiting for us to come visit them in late October and learn how to harvest pollen.

Lastly Bismar visited with Sergio and his son Hector at Montefresco on Ometepe Island, Nicaragua. Sergio is also a first year beekeeper and received his colonies through the Tim Taber Memorial Fund.
Sergio is a carpenter so he made some equipment for his bees.
Like the other beekeepers on Ometepe Island, the colonies need food as the rainy season has not been cooperative. Sergio has a cornfield next to the hives and Bismar observed the bees returning to the hives with pollen from the corn flowers.

Bismar traveled to La Concepcion on Ometepe Island, Nicaragua to visit Miriam and Kevin. They are new beekeepers and received their beekeeping starter kits courtesy of the Tim Taber Memorial Fund. They live near the volcano on the island.
Bismar reported the colonies look good but they need to be fed. The yellow flower plant is starting to bloom so that will provide nectar for the colonies.

Javier and Susan are new beekeepers on Ometepe Island. They are funded by the Tim Taber Memorial Fund.
Susan was not present when Bismar visited as she was busy getting ready for their daughter's 15th (quinceanera) birthday.
Bismar reports that their colonies are in good shape but need food so he recommended that they feed immediately.

Oswaldo and Mariano are from Esquipulas which is a village on Ometepe Island in Nicaragua. They are new beekeepers courtesy of the Tim Taber Memorial Fund.
With Bismar's supervision, they found a beautiful queen who is laying a great pattern of eggs, but the frames show just a small amount of nectar, so Bismar recommended that they feed the colonies. He brought a wooden ring and bag of sugary syrup for them to feed the bees.

Bismar reports that their colonies have good brood and capped honey. They haven't fed the bees just yet.
Nicolas has a field of red beans, dragon fruit and the yellow flower is blooming so the bees have a good source of pollen.

Next Bismar visited Huber and Bryan from Los Jobos, west of Rivas. Huber and Bryan are sponsored by the Long Beach, CA Beekeeping Club.
Their colonies look strong with good brood patterns. As it's not raining, the bees are busy bringing in nectar and pollen.

Bismar also visited with Apolonia and Eduardo in El Crucero, Nicaragua. Apolonia grows coffee and the coffee bushes were in bloom so the bees had plenty of nectar.
Eduardo moved his hives to a new location as his colonies were losing population but the still have great frames of honey.
Apolonia's colonies are very good with great reserves of pollen and nectar.
Both have not fed yet but are monitoring their colonies to see if and when feeding is needed.
All of Nicaragua has not received much rain this season due to the influence of "Super Nino" this year.

Last week Bismar visited beekeepers Felipa and Juan Pablo of Sapoa, south of Rivas, Nicaragua. Susan of Philadelphia sponsored Felipa and her husband as beekeepers.
The rainy season has not materialized, it is dry but the colonies look strong with lots of pollen, nectar and good brood.
One bottom board was rotting so Bismar exchanged it for a new board. He advised Felipa and Juan Pablo to keep an eye on the colonies as they may have to feed them in the future.
