Comfortably Unaware

Comfortably Unaware "Comfortably Unaware" is more than a book. It is a poignant message about doing the right thing for ourselves and our planet.

"Comfortably Unaware explains, so clearly, how what we choose to eat has a direct impact on the health of Planet Earth: how modern agro-business and our thoughtless appetites are, quite literally, destroying the environment and the future of our children. I urge you to read it, to think about its message, discuss it with your friends - and start to change the world, one bite, one meal, one diet at

a time."
~ Jane Goodall, PhD, DBE, UN Messenger of Peace

"As vegan diets gain popularity across the country for a way to improve health and the welfare of animals, it's no secret that the environmental effects of this diet can have a positive effect on our planet. Comfortably Unaware helps readers take a closer look at just this - how to heal the planet by changing what's on your plate. A health and environmental advocate for over 30 years, Dr. Oppenlander has long been inspiring change with his informative message. May his message inspire you."
~ Neal Barnard, President, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine

"Many human diseases have their origins in animal products because animals carry a number of pathogens. It is important to note that many of these pathogens are found living naturally in all animals- never in natural setting for plants." Dr. Oppenlander

"48 million Americans (1 in 6) contract food-borne illnesses each year, with the vast majority of cases going unreported as the victim battles being ill without seeking medical attention. Over 3,000 people die each year from food borne illnesses. These pathogens are found living naturally in all animals, but they are NEVER in natural settings for plants." "On any given acre of land we can grow 12 to 20 times the amount in pounds of edible vegetables, fruit, and grain as in pounds of edible animal products. Using most of our land to support livestock is just one issue in the depletion of land caused by our choice in food." - Dr. Richard Oppenlander

While many people are still rightly concerned about the koala population being devastated by the recent Australian fires, it is important to note that koalas' habitat has been dramatically dwindling for decades- but not due to fires:

"Koala's were already hunted to near extinction by settlers, but the few that remained then began seeing the side effects of the quickly growing cattle population. Koala numbers have dropped precipitously because of deforestation, loss of eucalyptus vegetation, and the introduction of chlamydia- all due to cattle. Koala's were finally listed on the "threatened" list of national vulnerable species on 2012, yet Australia has one of the fastest rates of deforestation in the world, due to their increased livestock operations." Dr. Oppenlander, Food Choice and Sustainability
