The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is the nation’s largest veterans service organization, committed to mentoring and sponsorship of youth programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting a strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow service members an

d veterans. In contrast to other veterans organizations, the Legion offers a number of local programs and activities to strengthen its commitment to our nation’s grass roots and the people we serve. American Legion Baseball is one of the nation’s most successful amateur athletic programs; it continues to educate youths on the importance of sportsmanship and develops the quality of our country’s citizenship. The Heroes to Hometowns program is the only nationwide reintegration assistance service for wounded veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan. Additionally, millions of dollars in donations have been given to fellow veterans and their families in times of grief, and various scholarship opportunities ensure the future success of our youth. The American Legion is a nonpartisan, not-for-profit organization with great political influence perpetuated by its grass-roots involvements in the legislation process. Legionnaires’ sense of obligation to their community, state and nation drives an honest advocacy for veterans in Washington. The Legion stands not behind politics, but the issues and people that institute progress by focusing on veterans rights and quality of life. The American Legion’s success depends entirely on active membership, participation and volunteerism. The organization belongs to the people it serves and the communities in which it thrives.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

MSgt Edwin Bowers made a special trip recently to see a special PHS grad.

Class of 2022 alum and USMC 2nd Lt Ethan Howard recently graduated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, and his former MCJROTC instructor, MSgt Bowers, was right there to see the achievement. While at Portage High School, Ethan was active in MCJROTC, participating as a member of the Drill Team. His achievements post-high school are a testament to his strong work ethic and the incredible MCJROTC program at PHS.

Congratulations, Ethan!

Tonight at midnight, an unforgettable tribute arrives in our Second District of Indiana.

The Wall That Heals, the official traveling replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, opens to the public and will provide an opportunity for visitors to honor, remember, and reflect on the sacrifices made by those who served during the Vietnam War.

More than 58,000 names are etched on the Wall, each representing a life, a family, and a story that will never be forgotten.

Whether you are a Vietnam veteran, have a loved one whose name appears on the Wall, or simply wish to pay your respects, we encourage you to take the time to visit this powerful memorial.

Let us never forget the sacrifices of our Vietnam veterans and those who gave everything in service to our nation.

Today, June 2, we recognize Lou Gehrig Day.

Known as the “Iron Horse,” Lou Gehrig was one of baseball’s greatest players, but his legacy extends far beyond the diamond. His courage, humility, and perseverance in the face of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) continue to inspire generations.

Lou Gehrig Day is observed each year on June 2 to honor his life and legacy, raise awareness of ALS, and remember all those who have battled this devastating disease. The American Legion also recognizes the many veterans and military families who have been affected by ALS.

As Lou Gehrig famously said in his farewell speech, he considered himself “the luckiest man on the face of the earth.” Even in the face of unimaginable adversity, he chose gratitude, courage, and dignity.

Today, we remember Lou Gehrig, honor those living with ALS, support the search for a cure, and keep faith with all veterans and families affected by this disease.

Today, American Legion Post 260 honors the memory of Frank Gilbert Jr., a dedicated public servant whose life was defined by service to both his country and his community.

Frank proudly served as a United States Navy Hospital Corpsman and remained an active member of the U.S. Naval Reserve, assigned to the Marine Corps throughout his military service. As every Marine knows, Corpsmen are more than medical professionals.❤️

His commitment to helping others extended beyond his military service through his work as a firefighter and paramedic for the City of Portage. Whether in uniform or serving his hometown, Frank answered the call whenever others were in need.

Today, we remember a Corpsman, a Reservist, a firefighter, a paramedic, and a proud American whose service will never be forgotten.

🇺🇸 Fair winds and following seas, Shipmate. Semper Fidelis. 🇺🇸
