The Portage Department of Public Safety is entering a new chapter in leadership.

After more than a decade as Director of Public Safety and a distinguished 38-year career in law enforcement, Nicholas J. Armold has retired. Under his leadership, the department strengthened community engagement, enhanced public safety operations, and guided Portage through significant initiatives and challenges. We thank Director Armold for his lasting impact and dedicated service to our community.

At its December 16 meeting, the Portage City Council approved the appointment of Matthew V. Wolfe as the new Director of Public Safety. Wolfe has served the Portage community since 1996 and brings nearly 30 years of experience within the department, including roles as Police Officer, Detective, Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Assistant Police Chief. His background in accreditation, operations, and emergency response positions him well to lead the department into the future.

β€œWe are excited to appoint Matthew Wolfe as our next Director of Public Safety,” said City Manager Pat McGinnis. β€œHis long-standing service, proven leadership, and deep commitment to Portage make him the ideal choice.”

Please join us in thanking Director Armold for his service and welcoming Director Wolfe to his new role.

Congratulations!
