Port Washington Mama

Port Washington Mama Follow us on facebook to find reviews and event details. One of the biggest hurdles was just finding out about (and keeping track of) it all.

www.portwashingtonmama.com features family friendly indoor, outdoor and seasonal activities as well as a listing of tot classes, party spaces, restaurants, local momtrepreneurs and more! I always knew that Long Island was full of family friendly activities but it wasn’t until I moved from the City back to the ‘burbs and had a baby of my own that I realized just how much there was to do! www.portwa

shingtonmama.com is my attempt to share all that Port Washington, the North Shore, and beyond has to offer -- featuring fun, safe, kid friendly activities, classes, party locales, seasonal traditions and more.

Meet Junio & Chelsea – the heart (and hands!) behind Chagas Home Improvement 🛠️❤️

I’ve loved getting to know and working with this powerhouse couple who are transforming homes one project at a time. Chelsea and Junio met in 2017 while working at a Boston restaurant, married just 8 months later and haven’t stopped building together since. From gutting their own house during Covid to launching Chagas in 2024, they’ve turned their family history in home improvement and their passion into a thriving local business (and I’m so damn happy about it!)

Why I 💓 them:
🤌🏼 Clean, polite, communicative & efficient
 🤌🏼 Chelsea = brains 🧠 (detail-oriented, project management)
🤌🏼 Junio = body 💪 (calm, problem solver, skilled, carpentry-obsessed)
 🤌🏼 Specialties: bathrooms 🚿, built-ins 🪚 & projects that make a house feel like home 🏡

Fun fact: they started with 1,000 flyers in mailboxes 📬.. ONE client responded, hired them for multiple jobs, and word spread from there!

Local love: Chelsea’s a Port native and daughter of a former Weber teacher legend Mr. Ehrlich and Junio is a PWFD firefighter 🚒. When they’re not renovating, you’ll find them Kayaking off Bar Beach, biking sand mines trails 🚲, grab & go ☕ from Harbor Deli, breakfast at Schmear 🥯, or 🍦dates at Douglas & James with their daughter Blaire. Blaire is already pointing out house projects, so we’re guessing Chagas Home Improvement will continue to be a true family affair for years to come.

If you’re thinking about a renovation, bathroom upgrade, or just want to work with the kindest couple around on a home passion project, give Chagas a try, you truly won’t be disappointed!

Just had such a great experience at the new(ish) Verizon store in Port Washington — it’s tucked right in the Soundview Market/Target parking lot.

Ron and Harris were absolutely lovely to work with — super knowledgeable, kind, and genuinely helpful. They took the time to find bundles that made sense for me, helped set up my new phone, and even handled my Fios home/cell bundle on the spot.

Heads up: There’s an awesome back-to-school promo happening — add a new phone line and get a FREE iPhone 16 now through the end of August. No trade-in required. 🙌📱

This might sound a little weird, but there’s a scene in Billy Madison when all of his teachers from kindergarten on show up to cheer him on at his graduation. And honestly, it always kind of touched me.

Inspired by a Pinterest post many years ago, I started having my daughter’s teachers sign Oh, the Places You’ll Go each year—starting in her 2’s. Now, as she graduates 5th grade, the book is complete.

Flipping through the pages feels like a time capsule—a reminder of the wonderful teachers who gave her a foundation and helped shape her, guide her, and cheer her on.

To all the teachers out there: thank you for the big and small ways you show up. It matters more than you know. 💛

And to all the graduates/“moving up-ers” —Pre-K, 5th, 8th, high school, college, and beyond—please know you have a whole team of people who are so proud of your growth and are cheering you on every step of the way! 🎓✨

We care about our neighbors, our friends, and our community and are heartbroken to hear about Fernando. This is truly heartbreaking 💔

****

We are heartbroken 💔 A local man I know and miss—who opens Schmear every morning at 5–6 AM, greeting each of us with a smile—was reportedly met by ICE agents outside work in Port Washington on June 12 and taken away. His name is Fernando Mejia, and he’s been our friendly manager there for over a decade. We shared small talk while I grabbed my morning grub before heading to the LIRR, and he posed no threat—just honoring the early shift no one else wants.

Standing united today with the peaceful Port Washington community, it’s distressing to learn that Fernando is missing. He opened that shop before sunrise, often reminding us that no one else is willing to do so. Over ten years of service—gone in a moment.

By most accounts, he was detained for allegedly overstaying a visa. But for those who knew him, this man was caring, hardworking—and facing serious health issues, too.

If this isn’t a wake-up call, I don’t know what is. This isn’t who we are—or who we should be. The silence hurts more than words can. Please join me in urging empathy and justice by speaking up, contacting local leaders, signing letters, or supporting peaceful action. We can’t let this moment pass without standing for humanity.

Port Washington, let’s show what we value. 🇺🇸

It’s initiatives like this that remind me what makes Port Washington so special - we show up for each other! 💙

Weber 8th grader, Eve Benjamin, is organizing a walkathon for her mitzvah project to raise awareness and funds for a cure for fellow Port resident, 9-year-old Jack Conlon.

Jack is battling Alström Syndrome, a rare disease with no known cure. To fight back against diabetes, obesity, and multiple organ failures, Jack walks 3 miles every day to stay strong — rain or shine, he’s out walking with his parents or grandmother, determined to keep fighting.

Join us Sunday, May 4th, at 10 AM at the Weber Track as we all walk in support of Jack and his fight.
