Gallery 224 Gallery 224 is part of Port Washington Saukville Arts Council, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

Gallery 224 is a non-profit organization committed to providing a venue for thinking about art. Gallery 224 has a 11- year history in the Port Washington community, has hosted over 50 art exhibitions and featured the work of over 600 artists. We are currently promoting ARTservancy, a year-long artist-in-residence program in partnership with the Ozaukee Washington Land Trust, the River Revitalization Foundation, the Western Great Lakes Bird and Bat Conservatory and the Milwaukee Area Land Conservancy. ARTservancy seeks to promote the visionary work of both the artists and conservationists. The art created as a result of these residency experiences are featured as solo exhibitions rotating monthly throughout the year. We also exhibit the work of current and previous artists-in-residence at Studio 224.

Applications are now open for the 2027–2028 ARTservancy artist residency.

Offered by Gallery 224, ARTservancy connects artists with protected natural areas and conservation partners. Selected artists will spend 2027 visiting and engaging with an assigned site while developing a body of work inspired by that experience. The resulting work will be exhibited at Gallery 224 in 2028.

Artists working in a variety of media and disciplines are encouraged to apply. Applicants will be asked to identify their preferred land partners, although final placements will depend on artistic fit, site capacity and partner participation.

Applications are due October 31, 2026. The application fee is $40.

Thank you.

Last night's reception was a wonderful evening of conversation, connection, and art.

It was a joy to welcome so many familiar faces, meet new visitors, and hear our ARTservancy artists share the stories behind their work. The conversations that unfolded throughout the evening are exactly what we hope Gallery 224 can inspire—a place where art brings people together.

A heartfelt thank you to our exhibiting artists, our ARTservancy land partners, our volunteers, and everyone who joined us. Your support helps make evenings like this possible.

If you missed the reception, there's still plenty of time to experience the exhibition. Stop in, spend some time with the work, and discover the unique perspectives each artist brings to the landscapes that inspired them.

We look forward to seeing you in the gallery.

Meet ARTservancy artist Paula DeStefanis.

During her year-long residency at Shannon Preserve, Paula looked beyond the landscape itself to the stories written into it. Weathered surfaces, changing colors, and the marks left by time became the inspiration for paintings that explore memory, history, and our connection to place.

This body of work also carries a deeply personal meaning. Created in memory of her cousin, Mark Murphy—a founding member of the Ozaukee Land Trust—the series honors his lifelong dedication to protecting the natural landscapes he loved.

Swipe through to learn more about Paula, her inspiration, and the work now on view at Gallery 224.

Join us for the artist reception Tonight, Friday, July 10, from 6:00–7:30 pm, where you'll have the opportunity to meet Paula and the other ARTservancy artists and hear more about the stories behind their work.

What does it really mean to care for a forest?

For ARTservancy artist Matthew Groshek, the answer wasn't found in sweeping landscapes or scenic overlooks. Instead, he turned his lens toward the people whose quiet, often unseen work helps protected lands thrive.

During his residency at Decorah Woods, Matthew volunteered alongside conservation crews planting trees, removing invasive species, and restoring the forest. His photographs document not only the work itself, but the relationship between people and place.

"The effort to care for these lands is massive and worthy of acknowledgment."

Through his images, Matthew explores stewardship as an act of trust—between people, the land, and the living communities that depend on it.

"The stewards and the land must establish some kind of trust."

Swipe through to learn more about Matthew's work, then join us at Gallery 224 for the ARTservancy Artist Reception on Friday, July 10, from 6:00–7:30 PM, where you'll have the opportunity to meet Matthew and the other exhibiting artists.

Meet ARTservancy artist Sheree Wood.

Over the past year, Sheree has spent time walking the fields, forests, and shoreline of Afterglow Farm—not simply documenting the landscape, but allowing each season to shape the work that eventually became The Afterglow Series.

Rather than painting exactly what she sees, Sheree explores what it feels like to experience a place. Memory, imagination, and emotion become just as important as the landscape itself.

Swipe through to learn a little about Sheree, her inspiration, and a glimpse of the work now on view at Gallery 224.

Join us for the artist reception on Friday, July 10, from 6:00–7:30 pm, where you'll have the opportunity to meet Sheree and the other ARTservancy artists and hear more about their creative journeys.

Tomorrow we open our newest ARTservancy exhibition, featuring the work of Sheree Wood, Paula DeStefanis, and Matthew Groshek.

Each artist spent the past year immersed in a Wisconsin natural area through the ARTservancy residency program, creating work inspired by the landscapes they came to know so intimately.

This Saturday is full of art, nature, and community connection. 🌿🎨
We’ll be in two places throughout the day:

🕊️ Lake Michigan Bird Observatory Event
⏰ 9 AM–1 PM
Join us for a hands-on ARTservancy activity inspired by habitat, migration, and the natural world. Visitors can create simple nesting material orbs using natural fibers for birds and pollinators to use throughout the season... a small but meaningful way to support local wildlife while connecting creativity and conservation.

🎨 Port Washington Festival of the Arts
⏰ 11 AM–5 PM
Stop by our interactive community installation, Wildflower Patch. Visitors of all ages are invited to add a fabric strip to help build a growing textile-inspired landscape throughout the day. The completed collaborative artwork will be displayed at the gallery as a reflection of shared creativity and community participation.

Spend the morning with the birds, the afternoon making art downtown or join us for both.

ARTservancy Artist Spotlight:
Rebecca Jabs

We’re excited to share this beautiful feature on ARTservancy artist-in-residence Rebecca Jabs, written, photographed, and documented by Eddee Daniels for his blog, The Natural Realm.

Rebecca is one of 12 artists participating in ARTservancy, a year-long residency program now in its seventh year. A collaboration between Gallery 224 and regional conservation partners including Restoring Lands Land Trust, Milwaukee Area Land Conservancy, Tall Pines Conservancy, and Lake Michigan Bird Observatory, ARTservancy promotes the visionary work of both artists and conservationists.

Each participating artist selects a preserve to spend time in, observe, and engage with throughout the year. Rebecca’s residency site is Forest Beach Migratory Preserve, where her work explores the land, its living systems, and the layered stories found there.
