Bird City Wisconsin certifies cities, villages, counties, and other communities that demonstrate that they have successfully met a set of straightforward criteria. Communities select from a menu of criteria organized in six categories: (1) Habitat Creation, Protection, and Monitoring; (2) Community Forest Management; (3) Limiting or Removing Threats to Birds; (4) Public Education; (5) Energy and S

ustainability; and (6) World Migratory Bird Day. In meeting these criteria, a community engages in both public education and on-the-ground conservation activities that benefit birds while bringing solid rewards to the community.

🚨 Lights Out Alert!🚨 Tens of millions of birds are moving through Wisconsin during a major spring migration event tonight and over the next two weeks. Scientists are forecasting multiple “peak” migration nights across the state.

Lights Out Wisconsin is urging everyone to please turn off non-essential outdoor lights from 11 PM–6 AM during this critical period!

❓Why it matters: Most migrating birds travel at night. Artificial light can disorient them and draw them into urban areas, where they are at much higher risk of window collisions.

In the U.S., we lose between 1 and 3.5 billion birds annually from window collisions, making this one of the leading threats to bird populations.

👉 Help spread the word, share this post with your community, local business and municipal leaders!

To further help, you can also treat your windows by adding marks on the outside of your windows spaced no more than 2 inches apart. If you’re looking for a quick fix, use a bar of soap or washable window markers, a great, family-friendly activity!

Many people see Turkey Vultures and think gross… but did you know they’re one of nature’s most efficient cleanup crews? 🧹🧼

By feeding on animal carcases, Turkey Vultures help:
🦠 Reduce the spread of disease by removing carcasses before harmful bacteria can multiply
🌱 Recycle nutrients back into the ecosystem, supporting healthy habitats
💵 Save communities time and money by providing natural cleanup that would otherwise require people, equipment, and resources

Just a few more reasons why having diverse bird life in our communities benefits both people and wildlife.

Share this so more people can learn to appreciate vultures 🖤

✴️ New Community Alert! ✴️

Bird City Wisconsin is growing! Please join us in welcoming yet another new community this month - Slinger, Wisconsin - as an official Bird City Wisconsin community! 🐦🌿

Slinger earned this designation through a growing community commitment to bird and habitat conservation. Early efforts include expanding habitat through park and trail planning, planting and caring for hundreds of trees and shrubs across the community and supporting renewable energy through local solar projects. Community partnerships have been a big part of their success, from teaming up with Friends of Slinger Parks to enhance natural areas to working with local Scout Troops to connect young people with conservation.

We were honored to celebrate this achievement at Breuer Park with community members and local partners, featuring a beautiful poem reading by local Girl Scout Troop 10345, an Arbor Day tree planting the girls did a great job on, and bird feeder building activities. 🎉🐦

We’re excited to see all the great things ahead for Slinger as they continue expanding bird-focused efforts and inspiring conservation in their community.

Be sure to congratulate Slinger on this incredible achievement and watch for the signs as you enter the community!! 🎉

🎉 Join us in congratulating our 2026 Grow for Birds Plant Grant winner…
Lake Geneva!

Their project at the former Hillmoor Golf Course will kickstart habitat restoration at this long-neglected site. By replacing invasives and turf grasses with vibrant native plant beds along a small stream that connects to the White River, they’ll create important habitat for birds and pollinators.

One thing that really stands out is the site’s location, which will increase access to nature and bird habitat for residents of all backgrounds. The site will also feature educational signage to help visitors learn about native plants, wildlife, and the benefits of restoring habitat in their community. 🐦💚

We can’t wait to see updates from this project! Thank you to all the communities who submitted applications! There were so many incredible ideas, and we hope to see these plans and ideas continue to grow. 🌿

Thank you to White Pelican Farm for donating the plants for this grant and to SOS Save Our Songbirds for partnering with Bird City Wisconsin on the grant!
