Following the 5pm masses on Saturday, March 14th at Our Lady of Fatima and St. Peter of Alcantara churches, members of the JMML #1389 celebrated “La Festa di San Giuseppe” (The Feast of St. Joseph). The feast day of St. Joseph, the patron saint of Italy and of immigrants is March 19.
On this day, Italians honor St. Joseph for interceding and ending a terrible drought. The rain came and the spring crops were spared, preventing widespread famine.
In gratitude, the residents opened their homes to each other so as to share the abundance of food they had.
The tradition of creating a “St. Joseph’s Day Table” in one’s home continues. Family, friends, and strangers are invited into homes to share the food displayed on the tables.
Following Mass, parishioners were invited to take home bread, oranges, and St. Joseph prayer cards, and given the option to leave a free will offering to benefit the Community Outreach programs at each parish.
Thank you to our generous sponsors: The Roslyn Heights Funeral Home, North Shore Farms PW, and the Mazzilli Family for their generous support.
A heartfelt “Thank You” to the celebrants (Msgr. Robert Clerkin and Fr. Khoa), the staff of both parishes, and all who participated in the event.
