Supporting Fort Worden: Port Townsend's State Park

Founded in 1993, the all-volunteer Friends of Fort Worden provides financial and volunteer support for park improvements not funded by Washington State Parks. The nonprofit group works closely with park management to identify and support projects that benefit, promote, and protect the park as a natural, historic, recreational, and lifelong-learni

ng resource. Our projects include habitat restoration, trail signs, interpretive nature trails, bicycle racks, water-bottle filling stations, free accessible viewing scopes, pet-waste disposal bags/dispensers, and the Chinese Gardens Interpretive Trail. We also provide regular trail maintenance and invasive-w**d control, online and printed trail maps, guided walks, and a quarterly newsletter.

Big thanks to our 12 wonderful, sturdy work partiers who cut, hacked, and pulled blackberry, poison hemlock, and scotch broom today in the hot, hot sun! Special shoutout to Ed and John for hauling it all away in their pickup trucks!

What a great turnout yesterday for our gardening party! 11 hearty gardeners showed up to sweat in the sun and w**d the two entrance gardens, which now look fabulous! Our usual Washington State Parks & Recreation Commission truck is in the shop, so some their pickup trucks and hauled 4 truckloads of yard waste to the dump.

Our next work party is Saturday June 13, 9:00 to 11:30. Stay tuned for location. You can always check the web page.

Friends is having a Gardening Party!
When: Thursday, May 28, 1-3 pm
Where: Fort Worden entrance. Park in the pullout on the right just as you enter the park
What: Weeding/pruning the two entrance gardens (you didn’t even know there WERE gardens there, I bet)
Bring: the usual gloves, hat, water, plus shovels, sturdy rakes.

Rhody Day Painting Party today 10:30 - 2:00 PM at Fort Worden!
Join us today to paint Battery Stoddard, turning it into a Park interpretive center. We started last fall and are hoping to complete the project with a few more painting sessions.

Place: Battery Stoddard, Fort Worden (see map)
Date: May 16th TODAY!
Time: 10:30 to early afternoon (leave when you want)
Supplies: Bring Water. Friends of Fort Worden will provide all painting supplies.

No RSVP necessary. Just show up ready to paint (and have fun).

Bring - Gloves, hats, water, stiff rake, loppers. We will also provide tools.

We had an AMAZING turnout at our work party this past Saturday: 15 tough, brainy and brawny volunteers hit the Scotch broom at Bliss Bluff and near the glamping area, invasive yellow lupine near the beach campground, and MORE broom at the top of Battery Quarles. Big Red ( the big truck) was about 3/4 full when we finally called it a day (and a gorgeous, sunny day, it was, too). You can come get an outdoor workout with us, too!
