Last week, Northwest Maritime was honored to host Congresswoman Rep. Emily Randall for a Maritime Listening Session, bringing together partners from across the district and beyond to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing our region’s maritime sector.

The conversation explored critical maritime needs, from port infrastructure and federal investment to closing workforce gaps and building stronger pathways into maritime careers. Northwest Maritime was proud to share how the Blue Schools Initiative is helping address these challenges by connecting communities, careers, and the sea.

We were especially proud to highlight the story of Port Townsend Maritime Academy alum, Jared Diaz-Zavalza, who turned his maritime education experience into a career in the trades at the Port Townsend Foundry. Jared’s story is a great example of what strong, community-connected career pathways can make possible.

Attendees included the Washington State Ferries, Port of Port Townsend, Port of Port Angeles, EDC Team Jefferson, Washington Sea Grant, Jefferson County Commission, International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILUW), Puget Sound Restoration Fund, and the Port Townsend Foundry LLC, and the Port Townsend Shipwrights Co-op.

Thank you, Congresswoman Randall, for listening to our maritime community and helping elevate the opportunities and needs of this vital sector!

These are just a few of the incredible women bringing their knowledge, stories, and experience to this year’s Wooden Boat Festival.

From ocean voyaging and maritime history to Haida sail making, rigging, marine weather, boat handling, and the changing Salish Sea, there’s a lot to learn and even more to get inspired by.

Come hear them in person September 11–13 in Port Townsend, and check out the full Festival schedule to discover even more speakers and sessions.

Most adults go their whole lives without ever building their own toolbox. Vivian just did it. Pretty darn cool.

Our first-ever Tools to Make Tools: Build Like a Boatbuilder class just wrapped up! Taught by Joel as part of our Junior Shipwright Series, students spent the week learning traditional boatbuilding skills while building custom wooden toolboxes and tools of their own.

Not a bad way to spend a week.

(And a shoutout to Grizzly Industrial, Inc. for keeping our shop stocked with the tools to make it all happen)

Super chic, actually.

Bride Katie Nordstrom arrived with her dad, Steven Kiel, aboard a boat he started working on while Katie was still in utero. A pretty special way to arrive on a pretty special day. Check out our venue rentals page on our website to book yours.

Girls’ Boat Project is back!

In this program, middle & high school girls (ages 11–14) will dive into exploring, building, and learning by doing. They’ll learn woodworking and boatbuilding skills throughout the program, culminating in the completion of a small boat build. Along the way, they gain new skills, build confidence, and have plenty of fun doing it. The program is led by female role models from our Northwest Maritime staff.

Registration is open now, and scholarships are available.
