Meet Austin and Max! Two juniors at Maritime High School in the Marine Construction pathway who are getting hands-on experience in welding.

We stopped by today to see what students have been working on and hear from Austin and Max about the science behind welding and the skills they’re developing.

This is what our Blue Schools Initiative is all about: connecting students with hands-on learning and real career opportunities in the maritime industry.

And a huge congratulations to the students and educators at Maritime High School for earning Gold for Best Trade/Technical School in the 2026 Best in the PNW competition!

Meet Halee and AJ, our two instructors for this session of Girls’ Boat Project! Both are captains with extensive maritime backgrounds, bringing years of experience and a whole lot of knowledge to the Boatshop.

We sat down with them to talk about what the girls are learning beyond boatbuilding, from problem-solving and working together to trusting their own skills to build confidence that carries into every part of life.

They also share their experiences working in a male-dominated industry and why female representation and leadership matter. Having women to learn from and look up to helps young girls see a future for themselves in maritime and beyond.

Today is only day two of this two-month session! Keep checking back over the coming weeks to see the progress the girls make on the vessel they’re building together.

Another look at what we do here at Northwest Maritime! This episode of NW Explorer by takes a look at the Swan Hotel, which is owned by Northwest Maritime and helps fund our programming! In addition to being a great location right in the heart of Port Townsend, we're also dog-friendly and have some pretty sweet amenities!

The episode also heads into our Boatshop, where Joel shares a bit about the transformative power of getting people together to build boats. Give it a watch to learn a little more about where you can stay when visiting Port Townsend and the work your stay helps support!

Last call for Girls’ Boat Project! The 8-week session starts tomorrow, October 7, and there’s still time to register.

Girls ages 11–14 get hands-on in the Boatshop, learning woodworking and boatbuilding techniques alongside female role models from the Northwest Maritime team who are skilled in woodworking, boatbuilding, and other maritime skills.

Scholarships are available, and no one will be turned away due to lack of funds. If cost is keeping you from signing up, please reach out to us or apply for a scholarship during registration!

Wednesdays, 1:30–4 PM

We’re looking for a Maritime Education Instructor to join our team!

This is a full-time position working primarily at Maritime High School in Des Moines and in Seattle’s South Park neighborhood. Bring your experience in the maritime field to project-based learning, teaching, youth mentorship, field trips, workshops, and trainings.

$26–$28/hour + benefits
Mon–Fri 8 am–4 pm
