⚙️ Only in Port Townsend… where art, engineering, costumes, and glorious absurdity collide!

The Great Port Townsend Bay Kinetic Sculpture Race returns October 3 & 4, bringing a weekend of wonderfully weird, human-powered creations to town. This year’s theme is Fauna & Flora, so expect plenty of imaginative creatures and botanical brilliance along the way!

Saturday, October 3 kicks off the festivities with the Kinetic Kourse Parade, followed by the Brake Test and other pre-race fun downtown. While you’re exploring, swing by the Salish Sea Makers Market at Pope Marine Plaza & the Cotton Building for local makers, hands-on activities, music, and more.

Then on Sunday, October 4, it’s race day! Watch kinetic sculptures and their costumed crews tackle the infamous course—navigating sand, mud, water, and road using nothing but human power (and perhaps a healthy dose of questionable engineering).

Make a weekend of it: grab a coffee, find a spot along the course, explore downtown shops and restaurants, and experience one of Port Townsend’s quirkiest traditions.

The 27th Annual Port Townsend Film Festival takes over town this weekend, bringing films, filmmakers, conversations, and plenty of movie magic to venues throughout our historic seaport.

There’s something pretty special about catching a great film, then stepping outside into downtown Port Townsend — grabbing a bite, browsing the shops, wandering the waterfront, and maybe spotting a filmmaker or two along the way.

Whether you’re planning a full weekend of screenings or adding a movie to your Port Townsend getaway, the Film Festival is a perfect excuse to make a weekend of it. 🍿🎥

Port Townsend was looking especially nautical this past weekend. ⛵

Wooden boats lined the marinas and shoreline, masts filled the skyline, sails crossed the bay, and everywhere you looked there seemed to be another scene straight out of Port Townsend’s maritime past.

With the Wooden Boat Festival bringing vessels from near and far to our waterfront, the whole town felt like a celebration of the sea—and it made for some pretty incredible views.

The Festival may be over, but Port Townsend’s maritime spirit isn’t going anywhere. From our working waterfront and boatyards to historic buildings, marinas and miles of shoreline, the connection to the water is part of what makes this place so special.

Planning an Olympic Peninsula road trip—or trying to reach Port Townsend from the West Coast? You can still get here! You’ll just want to plan your route before you go. 🍂

Repairs to the historic US 101 Hoh River Bridge mean you can’t currently drive the entire Olympic Peninsula Loop, but destinations throughout the peninsula remain accessible from either the north or south.

Traveling to Port Townsend from Forks, La Push, the Hoh Rainforest or the west side? Head north on US 101 and continue around the North Olympic Peninsula toward Port Townsend.

Exploring Ruby Beach, Kalaloch or the Quinault Rainforest? Those destinations are best accessed from the southern route while bridge repairs are underway.

The 95-year-old Hoh River Bridge may temporarily interrupt the full loop, but it doesn’t have to interrupt your trip. Check your route, allow a little extra time, and keep exploring.

Port Townsend—and the rest of the Olympic Peninsula—is still waiting for you this fall. 🍁

⛵ Wooden boats. Big sails. Maritime magic.

The Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival returns September 11–13, filling the waterfront with incredible boats, boatbuilders, craftspeople, live music, demonstrations, and maritime lovers from near and far.

A Port Townsend tradition since 1977, the Festival is as much about the people as the boats—from skilled makers and sailors to the 600+ volunteers and nearly 80 staff and seasonal team members who bring it all to life.

This year’s theme, Sails, Rigging & Spars, celebrates the craft, skill, and know-how that keeps a sailboat moving.

And Festival weekend is a pretty great excuse to experience more of Port Townsend. Stay for the weekend, explore the historic districts, browse local shops and galleries, grab a bite or a drink, and soak up the waterfront energy.
