Organic seed systems, when viewed as an alternative to the dominant seed system, help address bigger problems in agriculture.

Organic seed reduces organic agriculture’s reliance on a seed industry based on proprietary control and chemical-intensive farms. Expanding organic seed systems can also increase economic opportunities for farmers who successfully produce organic seed on their farms. The benefits include becoming more seed self-sufficient, reducing input costs, selling organic seed commercially, and reducing financial risks by having seed that’s better adapted to their farm.

Farmer involvement decentralizes how organic seed is bred, produced, and distributed, and expands the diversity of seed grown and available.

This season, the OSPREY (Organic Seed Production Research on Economics and Yield) Project team has been busy with 2026 field trials and events across North America.

Since June 2026, we and our OSPREY partners have hosted nine events, including workshops, field days, education and resource sharing, and regional gatherings. Collectively, we reached 300+ seed community stakeholders, leading to increased seed production knowledge and experience.

Moreover, we’re in our second year of replicated seed yield trials across seven states. The trials include the same four core seed crops (broccoli, lettuce, summer squash, and tomato); we’re feeling more confident in our second season of cultivation and data collection. Once we finish harvesting and cleaning, we’ll begin final seed cleaning, seed counts, and germination testing.

In addition to these trials, we are also evaluating the effect of different irrigation amounts on seed production and yield. As water availability concerns increase, we aim to learn how to reduce water rates and still produce a successful crop and seed yield. We’ll share the trial data in the future, alongside the comprehensive 2025-2026 OSPREY project data.

To help answer that question, we developed the Seed Economics Toolkit, a set of tools to help organic seed growers understand production costs, track labor and inventory, plan seed crops, and evaluate profitability.

This session introduces equipment options and selection, equipment for increasing yield, equipment for various production scales and mechanization types, and equipment for harvest, cleaning, and storage. Presenters will share hands-on experience so that participants will gain insight into improving seed quality, reducing labor, and developing processes that fit their farm’s size and production goals.

2026 California Field Day Success!
Over 50 people from the Humboldt County seed community joined Organic Seed Alliance, CR Shively Farm, Aquilli Metzli Co-Op and Humboldt Permaculture Guild on September 12th to learn about organic seeds and farming, eat delicious local food, participate in hands-on seed cleaning, volunteer in the field, tour the amazing CR Shively Farm, and connect.

OSA featured the OSPREY seed production trials, TOMI research trials, SCOPE plant breeding trials, educational/informational resources, and a design-your-own seed packet activity from Local Seeds Coalition

Registration is live for the 2027 Organic Seed Growers Conference: Seeds Across Time: Relationships and Resilience.

Early bird registration is now live for the 2027 Organic Seed Growers Conference in Asheville, North Carolina, and online. This coming year, we will host two distinct portions of the conference. The In-Person main conference will be held March 26th and 27th, 2027, at the Crowne Plaza in Asheville, North Carolina. (Note: No hybrid option will be available for the In-Person event.) The Virtual portion will be held on Zoom on March 30th and 31st. Pre-Conference Events will be held in person in the Asheville area on March 24th & 25th.

Along with our partners at the Utopian Seed Project, Southern SARE, and North Carolina State University, and our outstanding planning committee, we are excited to bring this conference to a new region. We received 100+ proposals from around the world, and we'll announce draft programming soon, followed by pre-conference events. We are also excited about the Mini Variety Showcase, hosted in collaboration with the Culinary Breeding Network, the massive Seed Swap, and a newly proposed “Immersive Collard Experience” featuring work from the Heirloom Collard Project.
