Loretta Swit, best known for starring on the hit comedy "M*A*S*H," has died at the age of 87.

Born in Passaic, New Jersey, in 1937, Swit attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York.

In 1969, she moved to Los Angeles and appeared in a variety of series, including “Mission: Impossible” and “Bonanza.”

She would later land the role of Maj. Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan on "M*A*S*H," which was based on Robert Altman’s 1970 film and followed the lives of the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital during the Korean War.

The show aired for 11 seasons, from 1972 to 1983. Swit, who appeared in all but 11 episodes of the series, received 10 Emmy nominations, winning two for her performance.

Swit also appeared in several movies, including 1983's "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" and 1987's "Whoops Apocalypse." She also performed on Broadway in “Same Time, Next Year” in 1975 and “The Mystery of Edwin Drood” in 1986.
