It’s hard work solo but I got ‘er done! 🥵

Next step will be lining the bed with landscape fabric and filling it with compost. Then we will start our fall crop of climbers! 🫛

Look forward to seeing you Thursday evening!

Looking forward to meeting everybody today while we work to bring this garden to a new era.

Starting Thursday, September 11th we will be working 2 days a week in the garden and hope you will come join us! Mark your calendars! You don't have to come every day. Once a month, once a week. 2 days one week a month. We are totally flexible and appreciate your help!

We always have bottled water, Gatorade and Capri Sun cold and ready. We ask you bring your own gloves. We should have enough tools to go around. No matter what your physical ability is, we can accommodate as we have lots to do and every little bit helps.

Planting will be one of the later projects as we first need to get some beds cleared, some opened, some filled and even some built. We also have some cleanup to be done but nothing too heavy or strenuous unless you are super ambitious!

We look forward to having you join our team to grow the garden!

Gulf Community Gardens is a 501c3 organization. We work solely on donations from the community and grants as opportunities are available. We have no paid staff at this time and a devoted president who has put in countless hours. The garden is a labor of love to grow fresh produce for our community and it is time to fill this garden and our pantry to the brim!

Happy July 1st! After a long and hot June, this rain is very much welcome. We have some test plots going and wow! We had to water like crazy last month. We learned a lot about the soil in our raised beds and know what we need to change about them.

July is a time of gardener rest and recooperation. Time to start planning for the fall. But in July, there is not much to be planted. You can start another round of tomatoes and peppers via transplants if you can find them or maybe you have your own started. Cucumbers, Ocra, Pumpkins and southern Peas can be planted from seed.

Now is also a good time to start planning for fall and cold weather crops. More on cold crops later! Kick back and enjoy this beautiful weather we are seeing!

There’s only one thing that tops the salsa at Pepper's and Quatro Locos and that’s homemade salsa with fresh from the garden ingredients! Roasting tomatoes is easy and you can do it on your grill. Just turn it on and roast them. You can roast your peppers too!

We are needing a little assistance with the irrigation system. It is a well with a timer and zones. I can tell you all you need to know if you are experienced and willing to donate a couple hours to verifying the entire system is working and leak free. And if there are any repairs needed, I would need you to do those as well.

Yes, I can do this but do not have time until the end of the month due to preplanned personal obligations.

If we can find someone to assist, we can get planting much sooner. This totally slipped my mind when I said we’re almost ready to plant. Irrigation is key!!! 💦 🌱

A huge shout out to First Baptist Vhurch Opelika for the amazing work that has been in done in the garden. Check out the amazing transformation they did in 2 short days! 😍

We can not thank them enough. This is the 2nd year they have put in hard work in the garden.

The metal beds were donated to the garden from Vego Garden and Epic Gardening. These beds are full of soil and will be planted VERY soon! Stay tuned! 🌱

This Sunday we will be blessed with approximately 15 Auburn students volunteering part of their spring break to help get the garden going forward.

We need a little help. We need 6 or 8 wheel barrows that we can borrow for a few days so they can move soil, do some cleanup and build more beds. We are getting closer to having this all put together.

If you have one we can barrow you can leave it by the garden shed. Just shoot me a text with your name and a photo of it so I know whose is whose. - Jennifer (850) 227-6353

Good morning!

First, this is Jennifer Garthwaite, the president of the community garden. Thank you all for your support, big, small, just loving our posts. It all helps and means so much!

I have been listening to what the community wants and that is a space where community members can grow their own vegetables. We would love to be able to give you a space to grow your own while reserving space for us to grow for the pantry as well.

We are not to the point of ready to plant. We have had many setbacks. But we are still working toward that goal.

We need 2 things. Funding (so much funding) and physical labor to help build beds, move dirt and get it ready for planting.

We just are not ready for planting. This makes me SO sad. I want more than anything to be done with the construction and get plants in the soil. It has been slow going with limited resources.

We can get there much quicker if we can find soil. That is the BIG holding on using the 5 beds that are built. We need more organic soil. Mushroom compost is expensive. But if everyone can grab a few bags of compost from the Pig, Ace or St Joe Rent-All Nursery Supply and contact me for drop off, that would be amazing! Just please, nothing that is Miracle Grow unless it is the organic version. We can do this one bag of soil at a time. 💪🏼

I am working out details on bed rental. Yes, there will be a fee to plant as the cost of maintaining the garden is not free. Just like you, we have bills that we need to pay. This will help keep the garden growing for years to come. 🍅

Lumber needs: 4x4 posts 8 ft long, 2x8 pressure treated lumber 12 ft long. We keep it simple to these 2 sizes as our beds have been designed to use almost every scrap of the boards. If we have anything left over, it goes into other projects in the garden.

You can text me any time at (850) 227-6353

Have an amazing day! 🌱
