Join us for a free Florida Horseshoe Crab Watch training session and discover how you can help monitor one of nature's oldest living fossils in St. Joseph Bay! This statewide citizen science program trains volunteers to collect vital data on local horseshoe crab populations, biology, ecology, and nesting behavior during daytime high tides. Participating in this workshop introduces you to the program with zero obligation to perform surveys—though trained volunteers can jump right in to help conduct upcoming fall site surveys as we prepare for full spring monitoring.

It’s time to get started on our Panhandle Poultry Project! This is a great opportunity for Gulf County 4-H youth to learn about poultry care, nutrition, management, and showing while raising their own birds.

Even though scallop season has been cancelled this year, UF/IFAS Extension Gulf County was still excited to host an awesome educational scallop event last Friday! Our workshop brought together experts from NOAA, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), Florida Department of Environmental Protection, UF/IFAS Extension, and Florida Sea Grant to share valuable information about St. Joseph Bay and Florida’s scallop fishery.

Participants learned about:
🛥️ Weather forecasting and navigation for boat operators
🌱 Current seagrass conditions in St. Joseph Bay
🦪 Scallop fishery updates
⚓ Boating safety and scallop harvesting regulations
🔎 The Scallop Sorter Program and how YOU can help conserve Florida’s scallop population

A huge thank you to all of our speakers, partners, and everyone who came out to learn more about protecting our local waters and scallop population! We may not be harvesting scallops this year, but there is still plenty to learn about the resources that make St. Joseph Bay so special. 💙🌊
