🧸📚🧺 Let’s Read with a Ranger! We’re so excited to welcome National Park Service Ranger Sam Mischke to our Teddy Bear Picnic this Saturday, March 7th! We’ll be reading from 9:30-noon in the gazebo at the Port Royal Farmers Market. Ranger Sam will join us at 10:00 and 11:00 for a special reading of Under the Freedom Tree by Susan VanHecke. Join us in Naval Heritage Park for this free community literacy event.

💚📚 Many thanks to the Friends of the Spanish Moss Trail for commissioning DAYLO student leader E Achurch to paint a mini Little Free Library for the Kids in Parks portion of the Spanish Moss Trail. Thanks to the generosity of BabyLit, DAYLO was able to distribute 40 copies of B is for Bison to local kindergarten students. Stop by the Depot Road trailhead soon and check out our newest Little Free Library as well as the Beaufort County Library’s Story Walk. 💚📚

🧸📚🎅Season’s Readings from DAYLO! Thank you so much to everyone who joined us this morning (despite the rain) for our Holiday Teddy Bear Picnic read aloud event at the Port Royal Farmers Market. We so enjoyed sharing some of our favorite holiday picture books with eager young readers and their families, and giving away free books, courtesy of a donation from the Lisa Libraries.

We’re grateful to the Reconstruction Era National Historic Park for welcoming us inside their interpretive center at Pinckney-Porter’s Chapel for today’s read-aloud. And we’re especially grateful to National Park Service Ranger Katherine Freeman, creator of our Read with a Ranger collaboration and a dear friend to DAYLO. Ranger Kat will be beginning new adventures soon, and we were so happy to spend one more Teddy Bear Picnic with her. ‘Tis the season for gratitude, and we’re endlessly grateful to NPS and Ranger Kat, the Port Royal Farmers Market and Kit Bruce, and the nonprofit Pat Conroy Literary Center, for their partnerships, friendships, and support. Our Teddy Bear Picnics will continue in 2026; look for us every first Saturday, beginning on January 3.

🫶📚🤫 Thank you so much to everyone who joined us last evening at the Conroy Center for Silent Book Club Beaufort’s final meetup of this year! What a joy it was to welcome and converse with fellow readers in many genres before embarking on an hour of silent reading in a shared space. We also hosted a display about banned and challenged books in South Carolina. SBCB will return to the Conroy Center on third Saturdays in 2026, beginning on January 17, at 4:30-6:30 p.m. Make plans to join us and read freely in this community-building pro-literacy event.

🫶📚🤫 Silent Book Club Beaufort returns to the Conroy Center this Saturday, 4:30-6:30PM! Special thanks to Lowcountry Weekly and the Island News for their announcement articles about our final SBC Beaufort meet-up of the year.

Join us for an hour of silent reading from a book of your choice, bookended by opportunity to meet fellow readers, see a display about book bans, and take a book or leave a book in the event’s book swap. SBC Beaufort is held in collaboration with DAYLO and the Conroy Center. Refreshments provided. Let’s read!

👨🏾‍🏫👩🏼‍🏫🧑🏻‍🏫 Educators Rising! Team DAYLO was honored to be invited to present to high school-age future educators and leaders at the Educators Rising conference held at HBCU Allen University on Tuesday, an inspiring and empowering statewide gathering sponsored by the South Carolina Education Association.

Two-time DAYLO chapter founding president Mickie Thompson and our co-mentors Mrs. Bennett and Mr. Haupt  spoke to future teachers about the legacy of mentorship spanning from Pat Conroy and his teachers and students to our own pro-literacy advocacy and community-building work—locally, regionally, and nationally—in DAYLO. We are so grateful for this welcome opportunity to be in conversation and in community with students, and to honor DAYLO’s pro-education mission. Thank you to Dr. Lisa Hall-Hyman for her kind invitation to participate in this wonderfully impactful day.
