Stopped at Starbucks today and somehow managed to leave with something besides an overpriced coffee.

The guy at the counter swapped out a straw and handed me a free World Cup coffee cozy instead.

I know... it's a small thing.

But in an era where everybody wants another subscription, another fee, and another piece of your wallet, getting something for free from a giant corporation felt strangely refreshing.

🎃 BREAKING NEWS FROM BREAKFAST...

This morning I headed to Cracker Barrel with my wife and daughter for breakfast expecting biscuits, gravy, and coffee.

What I wasn't expecting was to walk into the gift shop and discover that Halloween 2026 merchandise is already hitting the shelves.

Naturally, I had to stop and take a look.

If you're anything like me, seeing Halloween decorations appear in June is one of the first signs that spooky season is slowly creeping back into our lives.

From pumpkins and signs to seasonal décor and collectibles, Cracker Barrel is officially getting a head start on Halloween 2026.

Most people looked at these Yankee Candle wine bottles and saw decorations.

I looked at them and saw a Halloween prop.

For about $15, a pool noodle, some flicker bulbs, and a little home haunt engineering, I turned these Marketplace finds into glowing Halloween accent props that will fit perfectly into a cemetery scene or witch display.

Not every project goes smoothly. There was some trial and error, a few choice words, and more wire ties than any sane person should own, but that's part of the fun.

Sometimes the best props aren't the expensive ones.

They're the ones you build yourself.

🎃 HALLOWEEN COSTUMES WEREN'T FOR CANDY...

THEY FOOLED THE DEAD. 👻

Most people think Halloween costumes are about candy, parties, and finding an excuse to dress like a giant inflatable T-Rex for a few hours.

Turns out the real reason is much darker.

More than 2,000 years ago, during the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, people believed the barrier between the living and the dead became dangerously thin. Spirits could wander the earth for one night each year.

Their solution?

Don't look human.

People wore animal skins, masks, antlers, and frightening disguises to fool wandering spirits and avoid being recognized.

In other words...

Halloween costumes started as a ghost witness-protection program.

Which means your twelve-foot skeleton, fog machine, giant spider, animated werewolf, and glowing jack-o'-lantern may actually have more historical backing than you think.

The technology changed.

The idea didn't.

These characters didn't just promote Halloween Horror Nights. They helped build the mythology that keeps fans coming back year after year.

But there is one character I've always thought Universal missed an opportunity with...

Captain Spaulding.

Imagine an HHN event built around Spaulding's Museum of Monsters and Madmen. Twisted carnival scare zones. Dark midway games. Original houses. Merch. The whole thing.

Would it have worked?

Or is Captain Spaulding better left as a legendary cult horror character outside the HHN universe?
