Today, on White Cane Safety Day, we recognize the independence, achievements and mobility of Veterans who are blind or visually impaired.
Observed each year on Oct. 15, the day highlights the white cane as an important tool and symbol of independence, while also encouraging greater awareness, accessibility and respect.
A few simple actions can make a difference: announce yourself, ask before offering assistance, speak directly to the individual, avoid moving personal belongings without letting them know and respect their ability to navigate independently.
Today, we celebrate the confidence, self-reliance and freedom that the white cane represents for Veterans and others with vision loss.
