VICTORY: Governor Signs SB 694 – Protecting Veterans from Claim Sharks

I am pleased to inform you that Governor Newsom has signed SB 694 into law, protecting California's veterans from predatory "claim shark" practices.

What This Means:
SB 694, authored by Senator Bob Archuleta and co-sponsored by Attorney General Rob Bonta, prohibits unaccredited individuals and companies from charging fees to assist veterans with VA disability claims. The legislation also criminalizes unauthorized access to veterans' federal login credentials.

Your Organization's Role:
From the Organization to the individuals and the newly formed Rapid Response Team, we did it. Your support was instrumental in moving this bill through the Legislature. Your advocacy helped protect California's 1.6 million veterans from exploitation.

Key Provisions:
• Prohibits fees for VA claims assistance from non-accredited providers
• Makes violations a misdemeanor
• Voids predatory contracts
• Aligns California law with federal VA standards

Recommended Actions:
1. Share this victory with your membership
2. Remind members that free, accredited claims assistance is available through County Veterans Service Officers (CVSOs) and VSO's. Help your fellow brother or sister in arms find that credible representative.
3. Report any suspected claim shark activity to the Attorney General's office

Thank you for your continued partnership in advocating for California's veterans.

Respectfully,
Seth Reeb

S. 3138, the Veterans Supporting Prosthetics Opportunities and Recreational Therapy (SPORT) Act, would expand VA medical services to explicitly include adaptive prostheses and terminal devices—such as customized limbs for running, swimming, golfing, skiing, cycling and similar activities—within the VA medical services package for service-disabled veterans.

By broadening the scope of covered prosthetic devices, this legislation will help ensure that eligible veterans can access specialized support items, empowering them to engage in sports and recreation that are vital for their physical rehabilitation, fitness, independence and mental health.

🚨 California veterans are under attack — again.

Claim sharks are illegally charging veterans for VA claims assistance, exploiting legal loopholes, and ignoring federal law. SB 694 (Archuleta) would stop this, but it’s stuck in the Assembly Appropriations Committee.

If it dies there, we lose our shot to hold them accountable. We need action now to protect veterans and ensure that only VA-accredited professionals provide claims assistance in California.

📞 Call Appropriations Committee members — especially if you live in their districts.

📢 California risks losing skilled military retirees due to outdated tax policies. AB 53 (Ramos) will exempt military retirement pay and Survivor Benefit Plan payments from state income taxes, keeping veterans in California to work and contribute. 🏡 Take action now!
